Cyprus: The Democratic Alarm (DISY) Emerged Winners In National Elections.
Nicosia; May 2026: The Centre Right Democratic Rally (DISY) emerged as the leading party in Cyprus, after the final count in the parliamentary elections, today (May, 25th) early morning. The final results bring the winner of the parliamentary elections to the Democratic Rally (DISY) with 27.2%, which has fetched the party 17 seats. It is mention worthy that President Nikos Christodoulides, hails from the Centre Right Democratic Rally (DISY).
- In second place, as expected, was the left-wing AKEL and its allies with 23.9% fetching 15 seats. The difference between first and second was 3.3 points.
- In third place is the National Popular Front (ELAM) with 10.9%, which according to the electoral law gives it 08 seats.
- In fourth place is the Democratic Party with 10%, giving them 08 seats.
- In fifth place is “ALMA – Citizens for Cyprus” with 5.8%, winning 04 seats.
- In sixth place is Phidias Panayiotou’s party “Direct Democracy of Cyprus” with 5.4%, fetching 04 seats.
As the Cypriot system is proportional with seat allocations per province and nationwide, there is no “absolute” threshold for entry into Parliament, as is the case in Greece and other countries. In practice, however, the threshold for entry is estimated at around 3.6%.
In this election, a higher participation, registering 378,150 people voted out of a total of 569,182 eligible voters have exercised their electoral rights, in comparison to 2021, which has registered 66.4%, which was a marginal increase in comparison to 2021 elections registering 63.9%.
In her speech, Annita Dimitriou – President of the Democratic Rally has said: “The citizens chose security and stability, noting that from tomorrow they will continue ‘with hard work’”. In her statements outside the Democratic Rally building in Nicosia, flanked by party executives, Ms. Dimitriou noted that it was an electoral battle “in an unprecedentedly toxic environment and the citizens chose security and stability”.

As she said, the mandate that DISY received “is to lead the new Parliament with consensus, with reforms and policies that bring results for development and social protection. Because our common mission is to take our country only forward, responsibly forward”.
Meanwhile, Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL Secretary General has said: “We are opening a new page, noting that the Left party not only increased its percentages, but also its votes. Tonight, a new, upward course begins. A course that marks not only the recovery of our percentages and our votes. But it also marks the recovery of the people’s trust in the party of the people, in AKEL. We all fought together”, he continued, “a very difficult battle, in very difficult conditions and against these conditions we showed what AKEL is. We have reversed a downward course of many years and now we are opening a new page, always with our eyes turned to the future”.
Stefanou has further reiterated that this did not happen by chance, but because “this party was born from the common man and returns the power it has to the common man”. Throughout the election campaign, he said, they proposed what the common man lives with, the problems of everyday life, the problems that plague a very large part of society. “Because we live within society. We do not remember it when there are elections”. Because, he continued, it is a party of society and ordinary people, starting tomorrow they will continue their work both inside the new Parliament and outside in society.
On the otherside, the entry of Almas and Direct Democracy into Parliament is the second big message of the ballot. Both parties secured 04 seats each, occupying space that until yesterday was considered available mainly for centrist parties and smaller traditional formations.
Phidias Panayiotou’s Direct Democracy capitalised on digital influence, unconventional political communication, and the fatigue of a segment of citizens with traditional parties.
