MGNREGA Transforms Farming in Khairadih: Pucca Irrigation Canal Becomes Lifeline for Farmers
Raipur, May 2026: Efforts under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to strengthen water conservation and expand irrigation facilities in rural areas are now bringing meaningful changes to farmers’ lives. A pucca irrigation canal constructed in Khairadih village under Shankarghar block of Balrampur district has emerged as a new source of hope for local cultivators.
An 800-metre-long lined canal has enabled irrigation water to reach nearly 250 acres of agricultural land, significantly improving crop productivity and increasing farmers’ income. The development has provided direct benefits to farmers in the region by ensuring timely and consistent water supply to their fields.
Under MGNREGA in the financial year 2025–26, the construction of the concrete irrigation canal was completed over a length of approximately 800 metres. Earlier, farmers in the village were heavily dependent on rainfall for agriculture and had to create temporary earthen channels to divert canal water to their fields. These makeshift channels often got damaged every year due to heavy rains and erosion, increasing both labour and maintenance costs for farmers.
With the completion of the pucca canal, this long-standing problem has now been permanently resolved. The irrigation facility currently supports around 200 to 250 acres of farmland, directly benefiting 11 farmers in the village. The assured water supply has not only increased agricultural output but has also enabled farmers to cultivate both kharif and rabi crops more efficiently.
Farmers have stated that improved irrigation has reduced cultivation costs and enhanced overall production. As a result, their income has increased and their financial condition has strengthened. Local residents have described the MGNREGA-funded project as a significant step towards rural development and agricultural prosperity.
Officials noted that similar initiatives under MGNREGA are being continuously implemented across the district, focusing on water conservation, irrigation infrastructure expansion, and rural asset creation. These efforts are helping strengthen the rural economy while improving the standard of living for farmers and boosting long-term agricultural sustainability.
