Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan to Meet PM Modi in First Official Delhi Engagement
New Delhi, May 2026: Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is set to hold his first official meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday in New Delhi, marking a politically significant engagement soon after assuming office as the head of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in the state.
The meeting assumes importance as it comes within days of the new government taking charge in Kerala and is expected to focus on key development priorities, financial assistance from the Centre and issues requiring urgent intervention from the Union government.
Although the official agenda for the meeting has not been disclosed, sources indicated that the Chief Minister is likely to raise matters related to infrastructure development, financial support for welfare schemes, and pending state projects that require central clearance or assistance.
Later in the day, Satheesan is also scheduled to meet Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Kartavya Bhavan in New Delhi. The meeting with the Finance Minister is expected to centre on Kerala’s financial position, allocation of central funds, and fiscal support for major developmental initiatives.
The Delhi visit marks Satheesan’s first major political and administrative outreach at the national level after taking oath as Chief Minister on May 18 along with his 20-member Cabinet. The Congress leader led the UDF to a sweeping electoral victory in the Kerala Assembly elections, ending the Left Democratic Front’s dominance in the state.
The UDF secured a commanding 102 seats in the Assembly, while the Left Front was reduced to 35 seats from its earlier tally of 99. The Bharatiya Janata Party also made modest gains by winning three seats and reopening its account in the state legislature.
Ahead of his meetings with central leaders, Satheesan held a series of discussions with senior Congress leadership in the national capital on Saturday. He first met Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, followed by a meeting with Congress President Mallikarjuna Kharge.
The Chief Minister later held separate interactions with senior party leaders Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. According to party sources, Satheesan thanked the Congress leadership for its support during the Assembly elections and discussed organisational matters as well as the party’s future political strategy in Kerala.
The visit to Delhi has generated enthusiasm among Congress workers and supporters from Kerala. On his arrival at Kerala House in New Delhi, large numbers of students, party workers and supporters gathered to greet him. The Chief Minister spent considerable time interacting with visitors and posing for photographs, creating a celebratory atmosphere around his first official trip to the national capital after assuming office.
Political observers see Satheesan’s engagements in Delhi as an important step in establishing coordination between the Kerala government and the Centre at a time when several states are seeking enhanced financial and administrative support for development projects.
The Chief Minister’s meetings with Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Sitharaman are also being viewed as an opportunity to open a constructive dialogue between the newly elected Kerala government and the Union government despite political differences between the Congress and the BJP at the national level.
