Israeli Airstrikes and Cross-Border Clashes Intensify in Southern Lebanon; Casualties Reported
Beirut, May 28: At least two people were killed and one person injured in an Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah-linked positions in the village of Deir Aames in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency, as cross-border hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah continued to escalate on Wednesday.
The latest strikes are part of a broader intensification of Israeli military operations across southern Lebanon, where several towns have come under repeated bombardment in recent days, deepening fears of a widening conflict along the border.
Lebanon’s Civil Defense reported that rescue teams successfully evacuated 29 civilians who had been trapped inside damaged residential buildings in Doueir and Nabatieh following earlier airstrikes. Emergency personnel worked through debris to reach survivors, with authorities warning that many structures in the area remain unstable.
In parallel, the Israeli army issued renewed evacuation warnings for residents of Nabatieh and later expanded alerts to several nearby towns, including Kfarhouna, Aaramta, Mlita, Jarjouaa, and Houmine al-Fawqa, urging civilians to move away from areas it described as Hezbollah activity zones.
Hezbollah, meanwhile, said it had carried out retaliatory attacks on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. The group claimed it targeted Israeli military positions in Zawtar al Sharqiya, including firing rockets, artillery shells, and heavy munitions at troop gatherings near Tallet al Khazzan and the surrounding riverbed area.
The group further stated that it struck an Israeli Merkava tank near Bustan Zattam using a drone, and engaged Israeli troops at close range around 9:00 a.m. near the Scout Complex in Zawtar al Sharqiya with light and medium weapons, forcing them to retreat before heavy Israeli bombardment followed.
Separately, Israeli warplanes carried out another strike on a building in the Mashrouaa al Rouz area at the entrance of Abbasiyeh, north of Tyre, reportedly destroying the structure. Additional airstrikes were also reported in Tyre and the Rashidieh Palestinian refugee camp to the south.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, the death toll from Israeli attacks since March 2 has risen to 3,269, with 9,840 people injured, underscoring the heavy human cost of the ongoing escalation.
The violence also coincides with continued fighting in the broader region. On Wednesday evening, at least seven Palestinians were killed and 18 others injured in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in central Gaza City, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society. The Israeli military said the strike targeted two senior Hamas commanders.
As tensions persist on multiple fronts, fears are growing of a broader regional spillover, with Lebanon’s south emerging once again as a key flashpoint in the Israel-Hezbollah confrontation.
