India Rest Harmanpreet for England Opener as Mandhana Takes Charge
Chelmsford, May 2026 : Ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, India Women began their white-ball series against England with a significant change in leadership, as regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur was rested for the opening T20I in Chelmsford. In her absence, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana stepped in to lead the side.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development through a social media announcement shortly before the match. The board stated that Harmanpreet had been rested for the first encounter of the three-match series, with Mandhana taking over captaincy duties for the game.
Speaking at the toss, Mandhana expressed confidence that Harmanpreet would return soon. “I think she’ll be ready for the second match,” she said while outlining India’s plans for the series opener.
India also handed a debut to promising youngster Nandani Sharma, who impressed in the recent Women’s Premier League (WPL) by emerging as one of the tournament’s joint-highest wicket-takers. Her inclusion underlined India’s intention to test bench strength and finalise combinations before the T20 World Cup later this year.
England, too, entered the contest without their regular skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, who is recovering from a calf injury. Off-spin all-rounder Charlie Dean captained the hosts in her absence. England won the toss and elected to bowl first, while also giving a debut cap to young talent Tilly Corteen-Coleman.
The series carries major importance for both teams as they fine-tune preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. India, who are looking to build momentum ahead of the global event, see the England tour as a valuable opportunity to adapt to local conditions and test squad depth against top-quality opposition.
The Indian team enters the series with confidence after enjoying success against England in their previous white-ball meetings. That positive run has strengthened belief within the camp as they chase their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title.
Before the opening match, Harmanpreet reflected emotionally on the possibility of lifting the World Cup trophy in England — the country where she made her international debut. Addressing the media in Chelmsford, she said winning the tournament there would be a dream fulfilled.
“It will be a dream come true for any cricketer who made their debut in England and then wins the World Cup in England. I can’t ask for anything more from myself or from God,” Harmanpreet said.
