Trump Signals Final Decision on Iran Deal, Sets Strict Terms Including Nuclear Ban and Strait of Hormuz Opening

Washington, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Friday said he is preparing to take a final decision on a proposed agreement with Iran, laying out strict conditions that include Iran permanently abandoning nuclear weapons ambitions and ensuring the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.

In a detailed post on social media, Trump said any deal would require Tehran to commit that it will never develop or possess nuclear weapons. He also stressed that the Strait of Hormuz must be fully reopened to unrestricted maritime traffic.

“Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb,” Trump wrote, reiterating his administration’s long-standing position on Iran’s nuclear programme.

He further demanded that the strategic waterway, through which a significant portion of global oil shipments pass, be opened “immediately, with no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic in both directions.”

Trump claimed that efforts were already underway to clear the strait of maritime obstructions, including underwater mines, and indicated that US naval operations in the region would soon be scaled back if progress continues.

“Ships caught in the Strait due to our naval blockade… may start the process of ‘heading home,’” he said, suggesting a possible de-escalation of military pressure tied to the evolving negotiations.

The US President also said that Iranian nuclear materials reportedly buried underground following earlier strikes would be recovered and destroyed in coordination with international partners.

He claimed the operation would be conducted jointly with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), describing it as part of a broader dismantling process of Iran’s nuclear capability.

According to Trump, “no money will be exchanged” under the proposed arrangement, although he noted that some secondary issues had already been agreed upon.

The President did not confirm whether Iran has formally accepted the conditions outlined in his statement. He said he would be meeting officials in the White House Situation Room to take a final call on the deal.

Trump’s announcement comes amid heightened global attention on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints. Any disruption or reopening of the waterway has immediate implications for global energy markets, shipping costs and inflation trends.

In recent weeks, Washington and Tehran have been engaged in indirect negotiations aimed at stabilising the region and extending a fragile ceasefire framework. Reports suggest that a broader understanding has been evolving, though key issues—including nuclear restrictions and maritime access—remain under discussion.

Energy analysts note that developments in the Gulf region are being closely watched worldwide, especially by major oil-importing countries such as India, which depends heavily on crude supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

As discussions continue, Trump’s latest statement signals both urgency and conditionality, with the US administration indicating it is prepared to finalise a deal only if its core security and strategic demands are met.
