Abhishek Banerjee Shifted to Another Hospital After Sonarpur Attack; Mamata Alleges Inadequate Treatment
Kolkata, May 2026 : Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee was shifted to a second private hospital in Kolkata on Saturday evening after TMC supremo and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment being provided at the first medical facility where he was admitted following an attack during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district.
Abhishek Banerjee was earlier taken to a private hospital near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass after he was heckled, assaulted and targeted by protesters while visiting Sonarpur to meet the family members of a slain TMC worker, reportedly a victim of post-poll violence.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, Mamata Banerjee arrived at the hospital accompanied by Abhishek’s mother, Lata Banerjee. The TMC chief went directly to the emergency unit, where doctors were conducting medical examinations and providing preliminary treatment to her nephew.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, Mamata Banerjee left the hospital with Abhishek less than half an hour after arriving. Addressing reporters outside the facility, she alleged that adequate medical attention was not being provided and announced her decision to transfer him to another hospital.
“We are shifting Abhishek from here. He is not receiving proper treatment. Perhaps there are instructions from some higher authority,” Mamata Banerjee told journalists before leaving the hospital premises. She also hinted that political pressure might have influenced the treatment process, indirectly blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the state administration.
Abhishek Banerjee was seen being wheeled out of the hospital in a wheelchair while wearing a patient’s hospital gown. He was subsequently admitted to another private healthcare facility located in the Minto Park area of central Kolkata for further observation and treatment.
The management of the first hospital had not issued any official response to Mamata Banerjee’s allegations at the time of reporting.
The developments followed a turbulent day in Sonarpur, where Abhishek Banerjee faced intense protests from local residents, particularly women, during his visit to the area. Protesters allegedly confronted him over local issues and the recent political violence in the region.
According to reports, some women protesters physically assaulted the TMC leader, slapped him and hurled eggs at him. As the situation became increasingly hostile, Abhishek Banerjee reportedly wore a cricket helmet to protect himself from further attacks.
Despite the protests, he managed to visit the residence of the slain party worker and met the bereaved family. Following the visit, personnel from the West Bengal Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) escorted him out of the area amid heightened security.
Even during his departure, groups of protesters lined both sides of the road, shouting slogans against him and accusing him of corruption.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the incident through social media and public statements, directly holding the BJP and the state government responsible for what she described as a politically motivated attack on her nephew and senior party leader. The incident has further intensified the political confrontation between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP in West Bengal.
