Gen N.S. Raja Subramani Takes Charge as CDS, Pledges to Advance Jointness, Self-Reliance and Military Modernisation

New Delhi, May 2026 : General N.S. Raja Subramani on Sunday assumed charge as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan, and outlined a vision focused on strengthening military integration, accelerating indigenous defence capabilities and fostering innovation across the armed forces. Reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the newly appointed CDS said the armed forces would continue to work in unison to meet emerging security challenges while implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “JAI” — Jointness, Atmanirbharta and Innovation.

Before taking over as the country’s highest-ranking military officer, General Subramani paid homage to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. He was later accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the South Block lawns before formally assuming charge of the post.

Addressing the media after taking over, General Subramani described the appointment as a privilege and expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the armed forces by the nation.

“I am honoured to assume charge as the Chief of Defence Staff. The Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Ministry of Defence, strategic institutions and all stakeholders stand united in a whole-of-nation approach to strengthen India’s security,” he said.

The new CDS emphasized that organisational transformation and reforms aimed at improving coordination among the three services would remain at the core of his agenda. He said enhancing jointness, synergy and integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force was essential for building a future-ready military capable of responding swiftly and effectively to modern security threats.

General Subramani highlighted self-reliance in defence production as a critical component of national security. He said efforts would be intensified to develop, induct and integrate indigenous weapons systems and defence technologies into the armed forces.

“Atmanirbharta is a central pillar of our national security strategy. We will accelerate the adoption of indigenous platforms and technologies to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen India’s defence ecosystem,” he stated.

Innovation, he added, would play a key role in shaping the future capabilities of the armed forces. Stressing the importance of collaboration, he called for stronger partnerships among the military, industry, academia, startups and research institutions to drive technological advancement and defence modernisation.

The CDS also paid tribute to his predecessors, late General Bipin Rawat and General Anil Chauhan, acknowledging their significant contributions in establishing and strengthening the institution of the Chief of Defence Staff.

Calling them “illustrious predecessors,” he said their leadership had laid a strong foundation for greater integration among the services and guided India’s military transformation journey.

General Subramani reiterated that the welfare of soldiers, sailors and air warriors would remain a top priority. He praised the professionalism and dedication of the armed forces and pledged continued support for veterans and Veer Naris.

“Our armed forces have consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism and operational excellence in protecting national interests. The welfare, training and readiness of our personnel will remain our foremost concern,” he said.

Along with serving as CDS, General Subramani will also hold the position of Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs, a role created to streamline military decision-making and enhance civil-military coordination.

The Ministry of Defence, while announcing his appointment, described General Subramani as one of the country’s most accomplished military leaders with more than four decades of distinguished service. Prior to becoming CDS, he served as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), a position he held since September 2025.

His military career includes several key operational and strategic appointments. He previously served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command and commander of important formations along both the western and northern fronts.

A graduate of the National Defence Academy, General Subramani was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. Over the years, he gained extensive operational experience across diverse theatres, including counter-insurgency operations, mountain warfare and border deployments.

His professional military education includes training at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Bracknell, United Kingdom, and the National Defence College in New Delhi. He also boasts a strong academic background, holding a Master of Arts degree from King’s College London and an M.Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University.

General Subramani has represented India internationally as Defence Attaché at the Indian Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan. His career also includes service as Assistant Military Secretary at Army Headquarters, Colonel General Staff (Operations) at Eastern Command, and Deputy Commander of a Rashtriya Rifles sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

As a Brigadier, he commanded the strategically significant 168 Infantry Brigade in Samba and later served as Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence and Brigadier General Staff (Operations) at Eastern Command. In 2023, he took charge of the Central Command before being appointed the 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff a year later.

Following his retirement from active service, he joined the National Security Council Secretariat as Military Adviser, where he continued contributing to strategic policymaking before being selected as India’s next CDS.

For his distinguished service to the nation, General Subramani has been decorated with some of the military’s highest honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).

As he begins his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, General Subramani inherits the responsibility of steering India’s military transformation at a time of rapidly evolving security challenges. With a focus on integration, self-reliance and innovation, he has signalled his intent to further strengthen India’s defence preparedness while ensuring that the armed forces remain capable, modern and ready to safeguard the nation’s interests in an increasingly complex strategic environment.
