Ukraine Seeks Increased Missile Defence Cooperation with US, Says Zelensky
Kyiv, June 2026 : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a significant increase in the production of anti-ballistic missiles, warning that current manufacturing levels in the United States are insufficient to meet growing global security challenges posed by Russia’s expanding missile capabilities.
In a statement shared on social media platform X on Sunday, Zelensky expressed concern over the limited production of anti-ballistic missiles and stressed that the issue could have implications far beyond Ukraine.
“There is not enough anti-ballistic missile production in the United States, and this could lead to a crisis in different parts of the world. Russia is ramping up its internal production of ballistic missiles,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader revealed that he had formally communicated his concerns to both the White House and the US Congress. According to Zelensky, the current pace of production falls far short of what is required to address modern security threats.
He noted that the production of approximately 60 to 65 anti-ballistic missiles per month is inadequate given the scale of challenges facing Ukraine and its allies.
“It is no secret, and Russia knows this. We need to expand production,” Zelensky said, adding that he had previously raised the issue with the former US administration and continues to press the matter with the current leadership in Washington.
A key element of his proposal is for the United States to grant Ukraine licenses to manufacture Patriot missile systems domestically. The Patriot air defence system has become one of Ukraine’s most important tools in intercepting Russian missile attacks since the outbreak of the war.
Zelensky argued that allowing Ukraine to participate in production would strengthen not only Ukrainian security but also broader international defence capabilities.
“We can increase the production of Patriot missiles. This will help us. This will help the Middle East and any other country that the United States decides to help,” he said.
The Ukrainian President also acknowledged that Europe remains dependent on American support in the field of anti-ballistic missile defence. Until a European-made system becomes operational, he stressed, continued US assistance will remain essential.
Addressing the ongoing conflict with Russia, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s efforts to intercept incoming Russian drones, including those that may pose risks to neighbouring countries. He said Ukrainian forces are attempting to neutralise all hostile drones, even when their trajectories appear to be heading toward nations such as Romania, Moldova, Poland and the Baltic states.
While reaffirming Ukraine’s commitment to defending its territory, Zelensky also indicated that a diplomatic solution should be pursued before the onset of another winter season.
“I think that we need to find a diplomatic way – to sit down and talk – before next winter,” he said.
However, he emphasised that meaningful negotiations would depend on sustained international pressure on Russia. According to Zelensky, both domestic dissatisfaction within Russia and continued sanctions imposed by the United States and Europe would be critical factors in encouraging Moscow to engage seriously in diplomacy.
The Ukrainian President further claimed that Russia began losing its battlefield initiative in December 2025, suggesting that recent developments have altered the dynamics of the conflict.
On the question of future peace negotiations, Zelensky raised the issue of European representation and suggested several countries that could play a leading mediating role. He pointed to the E3 group—comprising the United Kingdom, France and Germany—as potential representatives for Europe in any future talks.
He also praised the role of Nordic nations and highlighted Turkey as a possible mediator, noting Ankara’s previous contributions in facilitating prisoner-of-war exchanges between Ukraine and Russia.
As the war continues into another year, Zelensky’s remarks underscore Ukraine’s growing focus on strengthening air defence capabilities while simultaneously exploring diplomatic pathways to bring an end to the conflict.
