Trump Signals Fresh Push for Russia-Ukraine Peace After Iran Breakthrough

Evian, June 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Monday indicated that his administration would now shift its diplomatic focus toward ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict, following what he described as a landmark agreement with Iran that has eased tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking alongside French President Emmanuel Macron during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, Trump expressed optimism about the prospects for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, citing recent conversations with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I had two very good conversations yesterday,” Trump told reporters. “Now that this is finished, we’re going to be focusing on that, see if we can get that one done.”

Referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has entered another year of hostilities, Trump suggested that both sides may be open to a diplomatic solution.

“I think they’re both open to it,” he said, signaling hope that renewed engagement could pave the way for peace talks.

The US President also highlighted the devastating human toll of the conflict, stressing that continued fighting was exacting an unacceptable cost.

“Twenty-five thousand people a month are dying, mostly soldiers, and that shouldn’t happen,” Trump said. “We have to find a way to stop it.”

Trump’s remarks come as world leaders gathered in the French resort town for the annual G7 Summit, where issues such as global security, trade, energy, artificial intelligence and geopolitical stability dominate the agenda.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the war in Ukraine would remain a central topic during the summit and announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would join discussions with G7 leaders.

“We will have the occasion to discuss the war in Ukraine in order to engage together and negotiate a good and solid peace and sustainable peace,” Macron said. “President Zelensky will be with us as well tomorrow.”

The leaders’ comments followed extensive discussions on a recently signed agreement between the United States and Iran, which both Washington and Paris have hailed as a major diplomatic breakthrough.

Macron described the Iran accord as “a very important agreement, a peace deal with Iran,” emphasizing its significance for regional and global stability.

Trump argued that the agreement was already delivering tangible results, particularly in restoring maritime activity through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

“The deal is all signed, and the Strait is already partially opened,” Trump said. “Ships are starting to go out now. On Friday, it’ll be completely opened.”

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil shipments, is expected to stabilize energy markets and reduce geopolitical risks in the Gulf region.

According to Trump, resolving tensions with Iran will allow the United States to dedicate greater diplomatic resources to other pressing international crises, particularly the war in Ukraine.

“We had a very good conversation yesterday with President Zelensky and President Putin, and I see maybe we can do something there, I really do,” Trump said.

Macron added that, in addition to Ukraine, G7 leaders would deliberate on critical minerals, international trade, emerging technologies and global economic challenges, underlining the need for greater coordination among the world’s leading economies.

As the summit continues, attention is increasingly turning to whether renewed diplomatic momentum could eventually create conditions for a negotiated settlement to Europe’s largest conflict since World War II.
