Celebrate June 23 as ‘Single Women’s Day’; Directions Issued to Local Self-Government Bodies
Gram Sabhas to Pass Resolutions Honouring Single Women: Minister Aditi Tatkare
Mumbai, June 2026 : Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare has directed all Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Gram Panchayats across the state to observe June 23, which has been designated by the United Nations as International Widows Day, as “Single Women’s Day.” She instructed local bodies to ensure that all single women in villages and cities are respectfully invited and honoured during the celebrations.
The Minister also called for the adoption of resolutions in Gram Panchayats to promote the dignity, rights and social inclusion of single women.
Tatkare was speaking at a meeting held at Mantralaya to discuss issues, expectations and policy measures concerning single women, as the state government is currently in the process of formulating a Single Women Policy. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Women and Child Development Department, including Secretary Dr. Anupkumar Yadav, Commissioner Madhavi Sardeshmukh, Commissioner Dr. Jagdish Maniyar (via video conference), Joint Secretary V.R. Thakur, Deputy Secretary Sunil Sardar, and other departmental officers.
The Minister emphasized that the term “single woman” should replace the word “widow” in official and social usage, as it is more respectful and dignified. She further stated that Gram Sabhas and local self-government institutions should pass formal resolutions ensuring that single women are not subjected to discrimination, humiliation, or social stigma based on traditional customs and practices.
Tatkare also directed local authorities to collect feedback, suggestions and expectations from women during the June 23 events. These inputs will help shape the proposed state policy for single women and ensure that it effectively addresses their concerns and aspirations.
Highlighting the objectives of the initiative, the Minister said the programme should be used as a platform to identify and address the social, economic and administrative challenges faced by single women. She urged local administrations to take proactive steps to ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive the benefits of various government welfare schemes.
As part of the celebrations, local bodies have been asked to pay tribute to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule on the occasion of his 200th birth anniversary year and educate participants about his pioneering work for women’s empowerment and social reform.
The programme should also include discussions on employment, self-employment and livelihood opportunities for women. Special efforts should be made to include women who are not currently associated with self-help groups (SHGs) and encourage their participation in such collectives.
According to the Minister, the initiative will help improve awareness and access to government schemes among single women while promoting social acceptance, equality and dignity. She said the observance of “Single Women’s Day” would play a significant role in empowering women and fostering a more inclusive and respectful society.
