Modi, Trump Review Strategic Partnership, Discuss West Asia Stability at G7 Summit

Evian (France), June 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit on Wednesday, reviewing the growing breadth of India-US cooperation and discussing key regional and global issues, including the situation in West Asia.

During the meeting, the two leaders expressed satisfaction over the steady progress achieved in bilateral relations across a wide range of sectors, including trade, energy, defence, technology and people-to-people exchanges. Their discussions reflected the increasing strategic alignment between New Delhi and Washington, which has emerged as one of the defining features of contemporary international relations.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s appreciation for efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in West Asia, a region of critical importance to global security and economic growth. He stressed that maintaining uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains essential for the world economy, given its role as one of the most important maritime routes for energy supplies.

The Prime Minister also underlined the need to ensure the safety and security of civilians in the region, including merchant sailors and seafarers who operate along key international shipping lanes. India has consistently advocated secure maritime trade routes and the protection of commercial shipping amid regional tensions.

The meeting comes at a time when India-US ties are witnessing significant momentum. Bilateral trade has continued to expand, while both countries are working closely to address market access concerns and deepen collaboration in advanced technologies, semiconductor manufacturing, clean energy and innovation-driven industries.

Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the partnership, with the United States becoming an increasingly important supplier as India seeks to diversify its energy sources and strengthen long-term energy security. Defence cooperation has also grown substantially through joint military exercises, technology-sharing initiatives and procurement agreements that have enhanced strategic trust between the two nations.

The interaction between Modi and Trump underscored the importance both countries attach to their partnership. Beyond bilateral interests, the leaders also discussed broader regional and global challenges, signalling their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in support of economic growth, stability and security.
