MDMK Signals Exit from DMK Alliance, Hints at Closer Ties with Vijay-Led Government
Chennai, June 2026 : The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam appears poised for a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, with indications that the party may soon sever its ties with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) and move closer to the government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
According to sources within the party, the MDMK is expected to formally announce its withdrawal from the alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam during its General Council meeting scheduled for June 27. If confirmed, the move would mark one of the most notable political realignments in the state since the formation of the Vijay-led administration.
The development comes amid a broader trend of former DMK allies extending support to the ruling dispensation. Parties such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Indian Union Muslim League, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) have already expressed support for the government led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
However, the MDMK faces a unique challenge. Its two sitting MLAs were elected on the DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ symbol during the Assembly elections, making it politically difficult for the party to openly align with the ruling side while retaining those seats. Party leaders are understood to be considering the resignation of both legislators, followed by by-elections in which they could seek a fresh mandate before formally backing the government.
Veteran MDMK founder Vaiko and his son, Durai Vaiko, have recently expressed dissatisfaction over contesting under the DMK symbol. Durai Vaiko publicly stated that the party was unable to support the TVK administration despite its inclination to do so because its representatives had been elected on DMK tickets.
Recent political developments have further fuelled speculation about a changing equation between the MDMK and the ruling establishment. Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna met Vaiko at his Chennai residence earlier this week, while the veteran leader subsequently held discussions with Chief Minister Vijay at the Secretariat. Although Vaiko dismissed reports of an imminent alliance shift as speculation, sources suggested that political developments and future cooperation featured prominently during the nearly 45-minute meeting.
Adding to the perception of growing proximity, Durai Vaiko recently defended the TVK government against criticism over crimes against women in the state. Rejecting opposition claims that law and order had deteriorated, he argued that similar incidents had occurred under previous administrations and accused critics of attempting to create a negative narrative against the government.
The MDMK had contested four Assembly seats on the DMK symbol in the recent elections and secured victories in two constituencies. Should its MLAs resign, the number of vacancies in the Tamil Nadu Assembly would increase to eight, including the Tiruchirapalli (East) seat vacated by Chief Minister Vijay after taking office.
Political observers believe the party’s upcoming General Council meeting could prove decisive in determining whether the MDMK formally ends its long association with the DMK-led alliance and embarks on a new political chapter alongside the Vijay-led government.
