Switzerland Crush 10-Man Bosnia 4-1 as Manzambi’s Brace Sends Swiss to Top of Group B
Los Angeles, June 19: Switzerland produced a dominant second-half display to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 in their second FIFA World Cup Group B match at Los Angeles Stadium, with young midfielder Johan Manzambi scoring twice to propel the Swiss to the top of the standings.
Score: Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina
After being held to a draw by Qatar in their opening fixture, Switzerland responded in emphatic fashion, overcoming a sluggish first-half performance with a clinical attacking display after the break. The victory puts the Swiss in a strong position as they continue their World Cup campaign.
The match remained goalless for much of the opening period, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. However, the contest changed dramatically in the second half following a series of tactical adjustments by Switzerland coach Murat Yakin.
The breakthrough came when substitute Johan Manzambi, the Freiburg midfielder, announced himself on the world stage with a stunning first-time strike. The goal injected energy into the Swiss attack and shifted momentum firmly in their favour.
Switzerland doubled their lead soon afterwards through another substitute, Ruben Vargas, who finished confidently with his right foot after a swift attacking move. Vargas then turned provider, setting up Manzambi for his second goal of the evening as Switzerland tightened their grip on the match.
At just 20 years and 247 days old, Manzambi etched his name into Swiss football history by becoming the youngest player to score two or more goals in a FIFA World Cup match for Switzerland. He also became the first Swiss player to score multiple World Cup goals after coming on as a substitute.
Reflecting on his memorable performance, Manzambi described the occasion as the finest moment of his career so far.
“It’s probably the best moment of my career. We knew why we didn’t start well and we had to stay patient. We are a good team and I think we proved that today,” he said.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s task became even more difficult after defender Tarik Muharemovic was shown a red card for bringing down Breel Embolo as the last man. Reduced to ten players, Bosnia struggled to contain the Swiss attack for the remainder of the contest.
The Bosnians managed a consolation goal deep into stoppage time when Ermin Mahmic unleashed a powerful strike to make it 3-1. However, any hopes of a late comeback were quickly extinguished as Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka calmly converted a penalty to restore the three-goal margin and complete the scoring.
Swiss coach Murat Yakin credited his side’s patience and tactical discipline for the victory.
“It was important to bring energy onto the pitch and find solutions. We waited until the hydration break to make tactical changes so the opponent could not react. The fresh players created spaces, and we were able to decide the match convincingly,” Yakin said.
The comprehensive win not only boosted Switzerland’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage but also highlighted the emergence of Manzambi as one of the tournament’s exciting young talents. With two goals to his name, the midfielder has also entered the conversation for the tournament’s Golden Boot race.
