Canada Thrash Nine-Man Qatar 6-0 as Jonathan David’s Hat-Trick Powers World Cup Charge

Score: Canada 6-0 Qatar

Vancouver, British Columbia, June 2026 : Canada produced a sensational display to record their first victory of the FIFA World Cup, crushing Qatar 6-0 in a dramatic Group B encounter at BC Place on Thursday. Spearheaded by a brilliant hat-trick from striker Jonathan David, the Canadians moved to the brink of qualification for the knockout stages while Qatar’s hopes suffered a major setback.

The emphatic victory was achieved in a match overshadowed by disciplinary issues and a serious injury to Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone. Qatar finished the game with only nine players after two red cards reduced the Asian side to a numerical disadvantage.

The first dismissal came in the 33rd minute when Homan Ahmed was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Tajon Buchanan. Qatar’s situation worsened shortly after the restart when captain Assim Madibo received a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Kone. The challenge resulted in a broken left leg for the Canadian midfielder, who had to be stretchered off the field and rushed to hospital for surgery.

Despite the distressing injury, Canada maintained their focus and delivered one of the most memorable performances in the nation’s football history.

The six-goal haul effectively tripled Canada’s overall World Cup scoring record. Before the tournament, Canada had managed only a handful of goals in World Cup history. Kyle Larin scored in the opening draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Alphonso Davies had found the net during Canada’s appearance in Qatar four years ago. The nation had failed to score at all during its debut World Cup campaign in 1986.

Head coach Jesse Marsch hailed the victory as a landmark moment for Canadian football.

“No one will ever forget this day, and no Canadian will ever forget this moment,” Marsch said after the match. Holding up six fingers as he left the pitch, he added, “This performance shows that this country has talent, the right mentality, and the determination to compete at the highest level.”

The occasion was witnessed by a packed crowd of 52,497 spectators, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who attended alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Canada took control in the 16th minute when Kyle Larin scored his second goal of the tournament. Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada managed to parry Jonathan David’s powerful volley, but the rebound fell kindly for Larin, who calmly slotted home to make it 1-0. The striker celebrated by pointing toward his ears as the home crowd erupted in delight.

Jonathan David doubled Canada’s advantage in the 29th minute with a superb right-footed volley. The goal marked his first from open play in over a year and signalled the beginning of a memorable evening for the Lille forward.

The Canadians continued their dominance and struck again deep into first-half stoppage time. A chaotic scramble inside the penalty area ended with David reacting quickest after the ball rebounded off the crossbar, giving Canada a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

The second half began with the unfortunate injury to Kone and the dismissal of Madibo. Yet Canada refused to lose momentum.

Nathan Saliba, who came on as Kone’s replacement, made an immediate impact by scoring from a free-kick in the 64th minute to extend the lead to 4-0.

Qatar’s miserable evening worsened further in the 75th minute when Mohammed Muntari inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous cross. The own goal made it 5-0 and summed up a night to forget for the Gulf nation.

David then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, finishing off another flowing Canadian attack to cap a remarkable individual performance. The treble placed him alongside Lionel Messi among the players to score three goals in a single match at this World Cup.

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui acknowledged the enormous challenge his side faced after the dismissals.

“It was a very difficult match for many reasons,” Lopetegui said. “The players gave everything they had, but it is extremely difficult to compete in this environment with two players less.”

Canada also received a boost with captain Alphonso Davies returning to the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury, although he remained an unused substitute. Defender Moise Bombito, who also missed the opening game, made his tournament debut as a second-half substitute.

Having drawn 1-1 with Switzerland in their opening match, Qatar now remain in search of their first-ever World Cup victory. For Canada, however, this commanding triumph has significantly strengthened their hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds and signalled their growing stature on football’s biggest stage.
