FSSAI Directs States to Strictly Enforce Food Safety Norms, Warns of Action Against Violators
New Delhi, June 2026 : The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued stringent directives to all states and Union Territories, calling for strict and effective enforcement of food safety regulations across the country. The authority has made it mandatory for food businesses to use only food-grade, non-toxic, and corrosion-resistant knives, blades, and other cutting tools during food handling, processing, and packaging operations.
According to the latest advisory issued by FSSAI, inspections have revealed that some food business operators continue to use rusted, cracked, damaged, or painted knives and cutting equipment. The authority warned that such tools pose a serious risk of physical, chemical, and microbial contamination of food products, potentially endangering consumer health.
FSSAI emphasized that all equipment used in food preparation, processing, packaging, and storage, as well as all surfaces that come into direct contact with food, must be made of food-grade and corrosion-resistant materials. The regulator stressed that maintaining high standards of hygiene and food safety is essential to prevent contamination and ensure consumer protection.
The authority has also directed food businesses to undertake regular cleaning, sanitisation, and maintenance of all food-contact equipment and surfaces. Equipment showing signs of rust, cracks, peeling paint, corrosion, or any other defects must be replaced immediately to eliminate potential health hazards.
The advisory further states that food business operators are responsible for ensuring compliance with all hygiene and safety standards prescribed under the food safety framework. Proper maintenance of equipment and adherence to sanitation protocols are considered critical components of food safety management systems.
FSSAI has warned that any violation of these directives will invite strict action under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related regulations. The authority has instructed State Food Safety Commissioners, licensing authorities, and food safety officers to exercise heightened vigilance during inspections and enforcement drives.
Officials have been directed to pay special attention to the condition of knives, cutting tools, processing equipment, and food-contact surfaces during routine inspections. Any instance of non-compliance must be dealt with firmly, and appropriate legal action should be initiated against offenders.
The regulator said the move is aimed at strengthening food safety practices across the food supply chain and ensuring that consumers receive safe and hygienic food products. By enforcing the use of food-grade and corrosion-resistant equipment, FSSAI seeks to reduce contamination risks and improve overall food quality standards nationwide.
The directive forms part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to enhance regulatory compliance, improve public health outcomes, and reinforce confidence in India’s food safety ecosystem. State authorities have been asked to ensure that food businesses strictly adhere to these requirements and take corrective measures wherever necessary.
