US Ends Maritime Blockade Around Iranian Ports Following New Agreement with Tehran

Washington, June 2026 : The United States has officially lifted its blockade on maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports and coastal waters, marking a significant step toward easing tensions between Washington and Tehran following the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries.

The announcement was made by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which confirmed that American forces have ceased all blockade enforcement operations that had previously restricted maritime movement in and around Iranian waters.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, CENTCOM said, “American forces are not impeding the transit of vessels to or from Iranian ports. All US military blockade enforcement efforts have ceased.”

While commercial shipping routes have been reopened, US naval forces will continue to maintain a presence in the region to monitor compliance with the newly signed agreement. According to CENTCOM, American warships will remain in the area to ensure that all provisions of the understanding are implemented and respected by all parties involved.

The development follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement at the conclusion of the G7 Summit in France, where he outlined key details of the agreement and described it as a major diplomatic breakthrough.

Trump said the accord addresses several critical objectives that Washington had pursued, including ending the current conflict, reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“On Sunday, we reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish,” Trump said. “It ends the current conflict, reopens the Strait of Hormuz, and prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.”

Senior US officials later released the full text of the 14-paragraph memorandum, which lays out the roadmap for future negotiations and confidence-building measures between the two countries.

Under the agreement, Iran commits not to procure, develop, or pursue nuclear weapons. In return, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be fully restored, allowing normal maritime trade and energy shipments to resume through one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors.

The memorandum also establishes a 60-day negotiation period during which both sides will work toward a broader and more comprehensive agreement. The framework links potential sanctions relief to verified Iranian compliance with the commitments outlined in the document.

Additionally, the agreement provides for international monitoring and oversight of Iran’s enriched nuclear material, a measure intended to increase transparency and reassure the international community regarding Tehran’s nuclear activities.

The lifting of the maritime blockade is being viewed as one of the first tangible outcomes of the new understanding and could help stabilise regional trade, energy markets, and diplomatic relations in the Middle East while paving the way for further negotiations between the two longtime adversaries.
