Netherlands Thrash Sweden 5-1 to Seize Top Spot in Group F

Houston, June 2026: The Netherlands delivered one of the most dominant performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, dismantling Sweden 5-1 in a high-profile Group F clash at Houston on Sunday. Powered by brilliant braces from Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo, the Dutch side outclassed their European rivals to move to the top of the group standings and strengthen their bid for a place in the knockout rounds.

Coming into the match, both teams were viewed as strong contenders for qualification, but the contest quickly turned into a showcase of Dutch attacking quality. The Oranje wasted little time asserting themselves and struck in just the fifth minute. Cody Gakpo delivered a dangerous ball into the area, and Brian Brobbey was on hand to apply the finishing touch, giving the Netherlands an early advantage.

The Dutch continued to dominate possession and attack with purpose. Their pressure paid off again in the 17th minute when Denzel Dumfries burst down the flank and sent a low cross into the box. Brobbey reacted quickest, sliding the ball home from close range to double his side’s lead and leave Sweden struggling to recover.

Despite falling behind, Sweden attempted to respond and enjoyed brief spells of possession before halftime. However, the Dutch defence remained organised and disciplined, denying the Scandinavian side any clear-cut opportunities. The first half ended with the Netherlands firmly in control at 2-0.

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were effectively ended within minutes of the restart. Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo took centre stage, scoring the Netherlands’ third goal in the 47th minute with a composed finish after another swift attacking move. Just seven minutes later, he produced an even better effort, cutting inside before unleashing a powerful strike that flew beyond the goalkeeper to make it 4-0.

Sweden finally found a breakthrough in the 59th minute when substitute Anthony Elanga raced clear and finished confidently to reduce the deficit. The goal briefly lifted Swedish spirits and offered a glimmer of hope, but the Dutch never allowed their opponents to build any real momentum.

The Netherlands continued to threaten on the counterattack and created several opportunities as Sweden pushed forward in search of more goals. Their relentless attacking play was rewarded once again in the closing stages when Crysencio Summerville capped off an outstanding team performance with a clinical finish in the 89th minute.

The emphatic victory lifts the Netherlands to the top of Group F and puts them in a strong position heading into their remaining group-stage fixtures. Sweden, meanwhile, slip to second place and will need a positive response in their upcoming matches to keep their World Cup campaign firmly on track.
