Yoga Enthusiasts Across Western Nations Mark International Day of Yoga with Mass Sessions
Ottawa, June 2026 : Thousands of yoga enthusiasts across several Western countries gathered on Saturday to celebrate the spirit of wellness and unity ahead of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026. Large-scale yoga sessions were organised in Canada, Brazil, Denmark, and the United States, bringing together diplomats, government officials, community leaders, wellness advocates, and yoga practitioners under this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
In Canada, a vibrant yoga session was held in Toronto against the iconic backdrop of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The event attracted government representatives, members of the diplomatic community, wellness organisations, and local residents who joined together to promote physical and mental well-being through yoga.
Addressing the gathering, the Consul General of India highlighted yoga’s ability to transcend cultural, linguistic, and geographical boundaries. He noted that yoga continues to serve as a universal path toward health, harmony, and inner balance. Participants took part in a synchronised yoga session that reflected the values of community engagement, inclusivity, and collective wellness.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, celebrations were held at one of the world’s most spectacular natural landmarks — the Foz do Iguaçu waterfalls. India’s Ambassador to Brazil, Dinesh Bhatia, led a specially curated yoga session amid the breathtaking surroundings. The event served as a curtain-raiser to the International Day of Yoga and underscored the growing popularity of the ancient Indian practice across Latin America.
In Denmark, the Danmark Yoga Forening (DYF), also known as the Denmark Yoga Team, organised IDY celebrations at Dokk1 in Aarhus. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly 100 yoga lovers who gathered to learn and practise various yoga techniques that can be incorporated into daily life.
Indian Ambassador Manish Prabhat addressed the participants and shared a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on the occasion of IDY 2026. He emphasised the significance of this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting how yoga can help people maintain physical fitness, mental clarity, and overall well-being as they age. Participants were introduced to practical yoga exercises designed to support healthy living and longevity.
Across the Atlantic, hundreds of people assembled at the iconic Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga. Organised by the Embassy of India, the event drew participants from diverse backgrounds who came together to embrace the holistic benefits of yoga.
The Embassy noted that the celebrations aimed to reinforce the message that yoga is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or background. The theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” resonated strongly with attendees, promoting the role of yoga in enhancing quality of life and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
The widespread observance of International Day of Yoga across multiple continents once again demonstrated yoga’s global appeal and its growing recognition as a tool for physical health, mental wellness, and social harmony. As nations prepare for the official International Day of Yoga celebrations, the events highlighted how an ancient Indian tradition continues to inspire millions worldwide and foster a shared commitment to healthier and more balanced living.
