Belgium Crush USA 4-1 to Reach World Cup Quarter-finals as Balogun’s Return Fails to Inspire Hosts
Seattle, July 6: Score: Belgium 4 (Charles De Ketelaere 9′, 33′, Hans Vanaken 57′, Romelu Lukaku 90+3′) beat USA 1 (Malik Tillman 31′)
July 2026 : Belgium booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals with a commanding 4-1 victory over the United States at Lumen Field on Monday, ending the co-hosts’ impressive campaign and setting up a blockbuster last-eight clash against Spain.
The Round of 16 encounter had generated intense debate even before kick-off after FIFA controversially overturned the one-match suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to feature in the starting lineup. However, the Arsenal forward struggled to make an impact as Belgium produced a clinical display to outclass the hosts.
Belgium struck early through Charles De Ketelaere, who opened the scoring in the ninth minute after exploiting gaps in the American defence. The United States briefly restored parity in the 31st minute when Malik Tillman’s free-kick took a deflection before finding the back of the net.
The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Belgium regained the lead just two minutes later. De Ketelaere rose highest inside the penalty area to head home his second goal of the evening, giving the Red Devils a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
The Europeans tightened their grip on the contest shortly after halftime when Hans Vanaken capitalised on a costly mistake by goalkeeper Matt Freese. The American custodian rushed out of his area in an attempt to clear the ball but was dispossessed, allowing Vanaken to slot into an empty net and extend Belgium’s lead to 3-1.
With the United States pushing forward in search of a comeback, substitute Romelu Lukaku added the finishing touch deep into stoppage time, firing home Belgium’s fourth goal to complete an emphatic victory.
Balogun, whose eligibility had dominated headlines following FIFA’s decision to rescind his suspension, endured a frustrating evening. Although his pace created occasional openings, Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois comfortably dealt with his limited opportunities. The striker’s best chance came in the 82nd minute, but Courtois denied his left-footed effort before Balogun was replaced by Haji Wright in stoppage time.
Belgium’s victory also extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches and marked the second time in three World Cups that they have eliminated the United States in the Round of 16.
For the Americans, the defeat brought an end to an otherwise encouraging tournament that had reignited football enthusiasm across the host nation. However, defensive lapses and costly individual errors proved decisive against one of Europe’s most experienced sides.
Belgium, seeking their maiden World Cup title, will now face Spain in the quarter-finals on Friday in Inglewood. The winner of that contest will advance to a semi-final meeting against either France or Morocco, keeping alive the Red Devils’ hopes of lifting football’s biggest prize.
