Australia Calls India a Top-Tier Security Partner, Unveils Landmark Defence and Energy Agreements
Canberra, July 2026 : Australia on Thursday described India as one of its most important strategic partners, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing a series of landmark initiatives aimed at deepening defence, security, energy and technology cooperation between the two nations. Addressing a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their Annual Leaders’ Summit in Melbourne, Albanese said the growing partnership reflected the shared commitment of both countries to ensuring a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
Calling Prime Minister Modi “a true friend of Australia,” Albanese said the relationship between the two democracies has reached an unprecedented level of cooperation. He noted that six years after elevating ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, India and Australia have emerged as trusted partners working together across multiple strategic sectors.
“Australia values India as a top-tier security partner, and our new Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation reflects our shared vision for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” Albanese said.
The Australian Prime Minister announced that the two countries have agreed to significantly strengthen defence collaboration by enhancing strategic coordination, expanding the scope and complexity of joint military exercises, and improving interoperability between their armed forces. Both sides will also hold regular consultations on security developments in the Indo-Pacific that impact their shared interests.
As part of the expanded strategic framework, India and Australia endorsed a Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap aimed at boosting cooperation in safeguarding sea lanes and addressing emerging maritime challenges. They also agreed to launch a new partnership focusing on cyber security, critical technologies and resilient supply chains, areas that have become increasingly significant amid changing global geopolitical dynamics.
Highlighting the rapid expansion of bilateral ties, Albanese said today’s agreements covered a broad spectrum of cooperation, including defence and security, education, science and technology, energy security, and critical minerals.
“Our partnership has never been stronger. We remain focused on deepening and diversifying our relationship so that both nations continue to grow together,” he said.
Energy security also featured prominently during the summit. Albanese welcomed the Joint Statement on Energy Security issued by both countries, saying it underlined the importance of resilient supply chains and accelerating the global transition towards cleaner sources of energy.
He observed that recent instability in West Asia had exposed vulnerabilities in global energy markets, making closer cooperation between trusted partners increasingly essential. The joint statement commits both nations to promoting renewable energy, expanding electrification, strengthening energy supply chains and encouraging investments across the energy sector.
One of the summit’s most significant outcomes was the signing of the administrative arrangement required to operationalise uranium exports from Australia to India under the Australia-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signed in 2015.
Albanese said the agreement would enable Australia to export uranium for India’s civilian nuclear energy programme exclusively for peaceful purposes, while supporting India’s ambitious clean energy goals and expanding opportunities for Australia’s resource sector.
“Today’s arrangement facilitates Australian uranium exports to India, helping increase the share of non-fossil fuel power generation while providing an additional market for Australia’s resources industry,” he said.
The Australian leader noted that both countries had long worked through interconnected supply chains but often lacked coordinated approaches. The latest initiatives, he said, bridge that gap by creating stronger institutional cooperation across strategic sectors.
The Annual Leaders’ Summit reaffirmed the growing convergence between India and Australia on regional security, economic resilience and sustainable development. Both leaders expressed confidence that the new agreements would further strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and contribute to greater stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region.
