Ostapenko, Arevalo Rally to Win First Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Crown Together

London, July 2026 : Jelena Ostapenko and Marcelo Arevalo produced a remarkable comeback to capture the Wimbledon 2026 mixed doubles title, recovering from a set and a break down to defeat Australia’s Storm Hunter and Marc Polmans 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in a thrilling final on Centre Court.

The Latvian-Salvadoran pairing displayed exceptional resilience and composure after a slow start, overturning a difficult position to claim the prestigious Grand Slam crown in one hour and 56 minutes.

For Ostapenko, the victory marked a significant milestone in her glittering career. The former French Open singles champion finally added a Wimbledon title to her collection after previously finishing runner-up twice at the All England Club. She had lost the mixed doubles final in 2019 and the women’s doubles final last year, making this triumph particularly satisfying.

Speaking after the victory, Ostapenko expressed her delight at completing an impressive Grand Slam resume across all three disciplines.

“It has been a fantastic week,” she said. “Now I am a Grand Slam champion in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Winning Wimbledon makes it even more special. Marcelo and I played really well together, and we had a lot of fun throughout the tournament.”

For Arevalo, the title was even more historic. The 35-year-old became the first player from El Salvador to win a Wimbledon championship, adding another landmark achievement to his already distinguished doubles career. It was also his third Grand Slam title following his men’s doubles victories at Roland Garros in 2022 and 2024.

The Salvadoran dedicated the victory to aspiring athletes in his homeland.

“It means a great deal because I come from a country that is not widely known for tennis,” Arevalo said. “Playing on Centre Court has always been a dream. Earlier this week my team toured the stadium, but I decided not to join them because I wanted to earn the opportunity to walk onto this court as a competitor. Thankfully, that dream came true today.”

He added that he hopes his success inspires young players back home.

“I want children in El Salvador to believe that with hard work, dedication and belief in their dreams, they can achieve remarkable things. This title is not only for me but also for everyone who dreams of representing our country on the biggest stage.”

The Australian duo of Hunter and Polmans appeared firmly in control during the early stages of the contest. They claimed the opening set 6-4 with confident serving and aggressive net play before breaking serve early in the second set to establish a commanding 3-1 advantage.

However, Ostapenko and Arevalo gradually shifted the momentum. Raising the intensity from the baseline while tightening their service games, they won six of the next eight games. Two crucial service breaks helped them edge the second set 7-5 and force a deciding set.

With the Centre Court roof closed before the final set, the momentum remained firmly with the eventual champions. Ostapenko’s powerful groundstrokes combined effectively with Arevalo’s sharp volleying and court coverage, allowing them to dominate the decider.

The pair secured decisive breaks in the fourth and eighth games of the third set before comfortably serving out the match to complete an outstanding comeback and lift the Wimbledon mixed doubles trophy.

The victory capped an impressive campaign for the duo and highlighted their outstanding chemistry throughout the tournament. While Ostapenko celebrated her long-awaited Wimbledon breakthrough, Arevalo created history for El Salvador and now has the opportunity to complete an even more memorable fortnight when he returns to Centre Court to contest the men’s doubles final alongside Mate Pavic.
