Wimbledon Final Locked at One Set Each as Sinner Fights Back Against Zverev

London, July 2026 : World No. 1 Jannik Sinner displayed remarkable resilience to fight back and level the Wimbledon men’s singles final against Germany’s Alexander Zverev after two gripping sets on Centre Court on Sunday. After losing a tense opening-set tie-break, the Italian responded in style to claim the second set, leaving the championship finely poised at 6-7(7), 7-6(2) after two hours and eight minutes of high-quality tennis.

The clash between the world’s top-ranked player and the reigning French Open champion has lived up to expectations, with both players producing powerful baseline exchanges, exceptional serving and impressive defensive skills under challenging windy conditions in London.

Sinner, the defending Wimbledon champion, entered the final seeking his fifth Grand Slam title and his 100th career victory in major championships. Despite seeing his remarkable streak of 14 consecutive sets won against Zverev come to an end in the opening set, the 24-year-old quickly regrouped to restore parity in the contest.

The Italian has enjoyed overwhelming success against Zverev in recent years, winning each of their previous nine meetings before Sunday’s final. Although the German managed to halt Sinner’s dominance by edging the opening set, he could not maintain the momentum as the top seed elevated his game in the second-set tie-break.

The opening set featured high-quality shot-making from both players. The first game alone produced one of the points of the tournament, with Zverev finishing a gruelling 22-shot rally by punching a volley into the open court. Both players held serve comfortably for much of the set, with Sinner earning the first break opportunity at 4-3. However, he failed to convert after mishitting a forehand, allowing Zverev to escape.

With neither player able to secure a service break, the opener headed into a tie-break. Sinner earned a set point, but Zverev responded with a booming ace before sealing the set with a thunderous forehand winner to take the lead.

The second set followed a similar pattern as both players dominated behind their serves. Zverev continued to dictate rallies with his heavy groundstrokes, while Sinner relied on his movement and defensive skills to absorb the pressure and stay in contention.

Neither player created a single break point throughout the entire second set, forcing another tie-break. This time, Sinner produced his best tennis of the afternoon, racing to a commanding 4-0 advantage before maintaining complete control to comfortably level the match.

The final carries enormous significance for both players. Sinner captured his maiden Wimbledon title last year by defeating Carlos Alcaraz but has not added another Grand Slam since then. He finished runner-up at the US Open before falling in the Australian Open semi-finals and suffering a surprising second-round exit at the French Open earlier this year.

Zverev, meanwhile, has enjoyed a breakthrough season. After claiming his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, the 29-year-old has reached his first-ever Wimbledon final, having never progressed beyond the fourth round in his previous nine appearances at the All England Club.

Victory would make Zverev only the third German man to win Wimbledon in the Open Era after Boris Becker and Michael Stich, while also completing the rare French Open-Wimbledon double in the same season.

For Sinner, another Wimbledon triumph would further strengthen his grip on the ATP rankings, extending his lead over Zverev at the top of the standings. The champion will also receive prize money of £3.6 million.

With one set apiece and both players refusing to give an inch, the Wimbledon final remains perfectly balanced as Centre Court braces for an enthralling finish.

Score after two sets: Jannik Sinner 6-7(7), 7-6(2) Alexander Zverev.
