Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni Arrives in India for BRICS Internal Affairs Meeting

New Delhi, July 2026 : Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni arrived in New Delhi on Thursday to participate in the BRICS Ministers of Internal Affairs Meeting, underscoring Tehran’s growing engagement within the expanded BRICS grouping and its commitment to strengthening cooperation on regional and global security issues.

Confirming his arrival, the Iranian Embassy in India said Momeni landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport and will attend the high-level ministerial meeting, where he is also expected to deliver an address. The visit comes as BRICS, now comprising 11 major emerging economies, continues to broaden its agenda beyond economic cooperation to include security, governance and strategic collaboration.

According to the Iranian Embassy, the ministerial meeting will provide a platform for member countries to discuss key internal security challenges and enhance coordination in tackling common threats. Discussions are expected to focus on areas such as counter-terrorism, combating organised crime, disaster management, law enforcement cooperation, border security, and mechanisms to strengthen information sharing among member nations.

The meeting forms part of BRICS’ wider efforts to promote multilateral cooperation and develop coordinated responses to evolving global security challenges. Officials believe enhanced collaboration among member states is essential to addressing transnational threats while strengthening institutional resilience.

During his visit, Momeni is also scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other BRICS nations. These engagements are expected to further deepen Iran’s strategic ties with fellow member countries and reinforce cooperation on issues related to public security and governance.

Iran has been actively participating in BRICS initiatives since becoming part of the expanded grouping. Earlier this month, Farzaneh Ansari, Iran’s Vice President and Head of the National Standards Organisation of Iran (INSO), attended the BRICS Heads of National Standards Bodies Meeting in Bengaluru, where she proposed initiatives aimed at strengthening collaboration in emerging technologies, carbon reduction and harmonised trade standards.

Her participation highlighted the importance of developing common technical standards, improving quality infrastructure and facilitating trade among BRICS economies. The meeting also reviewed a draft Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in standardisation, reflecting the bloc’s growing emphasis on institutional integration.

India, which holds the BRICS Chairmanship in 2026, is steering the grouping under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The theme reflects a people-centric and development-focused vision articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Over the years, BRICS has evolved from an economic forum into a broader platform addressing issues such as international security, climate change, energy and food security, digital connectivity, agriculture, labour, global trade and reforms of international financial institutions.

The inclusion of new members, including Iran, has significantly expanded the bloc’s global footprint and strengthened its position as a prominent voice of the Global South. Momeni’s participation in the New Delhi meeting reflects Iran’s intent to play an active role in shaping the group’s agenda on internal security while contributing to wider discussions on regional stability, multilateral cooperation and global governance.
