Bindyarani Devi Wins Bronze in Women’s 58kg Weightlifting as India Extends Medal Haul at Glasgow 2026
Glasgow, July 2026 : India continued its impressive campaign in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg category on Monday, adding another podium finish to the country’s growing medal tally in Glasgow.
The 26-year-old lifter from Manipur registered a combined lift of 199kg, comprising 87kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk, to secure third place. The medal marks another significant achievement for Bindyarani, who had earlier won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in the 55kg weight category.
With Bindyarani’s success, India’s overall tally at the Games rose to six medals — one gold, three silver, and two bronze — underlining the country’s continued dominance in weightlifting at the Commonwealth level.
Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth title with a commanding performance, lifting a total of 229kg (103kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk) to claim the gold medal. Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau secured the silver with a total lift of 215kg, recording 94kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk.
The battle for bronze remained intense throughout the competition. After the snatch phase, Bindyarani was tied with England’s Eliza Pratt, with both lifters recording 87kg. However, the Indian weightlifter produced a stronger display in the clean and jerk, successfully clearing 110kg and 112kg to move ahead and secure a place on the podium.
Her final attempt at 116kg proved unsuccessful. Earlier in the clean and jerk, her opening lift was initially declared successful before the jury overturned the decision, ruling it a no-lift after observing instability in her elbows during the jerk phase. The reversal appeared to increase the pressure, but Bindyarani responded with remarkable composure to complete her next two attempts successfully.
Although the bronze medal represents another major international achievement, the performance fell short of her personal best of 208kg, indicating that the experienced Indian lifter still has room to improve ahead of future global competitions.
England’s Eliza Pratt finished fourth with a total of 196kg, narrowly missing out on a medal.
Weightlifting has once again emerged as one of India’s strongest disciplines at the Glasgow Games. Earlier on Monday, Gyanehswari Yadav claimed a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category, while on Sunday Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu won gold and Raja Muthupandi secured silver in the men’s 65kg event.
Bindyarani’s latest podium finish further reinforces India’s strength in weightlifting and highlights the country’s growing depth of talent as its athletes continue to deliver consistent performances on the international stage.
