Hyderabad Metro Enables 25-Minute Green Corridor for Heart and Lung Transplant

Hyderabad, Aug 2026 : Hyderabad Metro Rail transformed into a life-saving medical corridor on Saturday, facilitating the rapid transportation of a donor’s heart and lungs for transplantation from Gachibowli to Secunderabad.

The time-sensitive medical transfer was carried out between Raidurg Metro Station and Rasoolpura Metro Station, covering a distance of around 14 kilometres and 13 stations. The entire journey was completed in just 25 minutes, helping medical teams transport the vital organs within the critical time window required for transplantation.

The organs were moved from CARE Hospitals, Gachibowli, to KIMS Hospitals, Minister Road, Secunderabad, with the metro system providing priority transit to ensure the medical team reached the destination without delays.

Hyderabad Metro said the operation was executed through close coordination between metro officials, healthcare professionals and hospital authorities. Seamless operational arrangements were put in place to ensure that the donor organs were transported safely and swiftly during a crucial stage of the transplantation process.

The successful mission highlighted the expanding role of urban public transport in supporting emergency healthcare. By enabling rapid movement through Hyderabad’s busy urban landscape, the metro helped medical teams overcome potential road congestion and reduce valuable travel time.

L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited said it remains committed to supporting emergency healthcare initiatives and stressed that urban mobility can play a role beyond conventional passenger transportation by facilitating critical, life-saving medical interventions.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad also witnessed another significant development in cardiac care, with KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, successfully performing a robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement on a 37-year-old patient from Rajahmundry.

The procedure marked an important milestone in minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Hyderabad. According to Dr Nisarga, Chief Cardiothoracic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, the patient, who works as an accountant with a prawn export company, had been suffering from severe mitral stenosis caused by chronic rheumatic heart disease.

The mitral valve is located between the heart’s left atrium and left ventricle and normally allows blood to flow from the upper chamber into the lower chamber. In patients suffering from mitral stenosis, the valve becomes narrowed and thickened, restricting blood flow and placing additional pressure on the heart.

Doctors said untreated mitral stenosis can progressively affect heart function and potentially lead to serious, life-threatening complications.

The complex robotic-assisted procedure was performed on July 23 and lasted more than five hours. Dr Nisarga noted that robotic intracardiac procedures remain relatively uncommon in Hyderabad, while robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement is still a rare procedure in the city.

The two developments underline Hyderabad’s growing capabilities in advanced healthcare and emergency medical coordination. While the metro’s rapid organ transport demonstrated how public infrastructure can support critical transplant procedures, the robotic cardiac surgery highlighted the city’s expanding expertise in advanced and minimally invasive medical treatment.
