Ankush Panghal Wins 80kg Gold as India’s Boxing Gold Rush Continues at Glasgow 2026

Glasgow, Aug 2026 : India’s Ankush Panghal delivered a composed and clinical performance to clinch the men’s 80kg boxing gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, defeating England’s Shittu Dimeji by a 4-1 split decision in the final in Glasgow on Saturday.

Ankush showed tremendous resilience after falling behind on most judges’ scorecards in the opening round. The Indian boxer quickly changed the momentum in the second and third rounds, combining aggressive combinations with sharp counter-attacks to gain control of the contest.

His tactical awareness and ability to adapt under pressure proved decisive. Three judges scored the bout 29-26 in favour of Ankush, while the other two judges gave close 28-27 verdicts, with one backing each boxer.

Despite facing the home favourite in front of a partisan crowd, Ankush remained calm and focused throughout the contest. He effectively neutralised Dimeji’s attacks while finding openings to land his own punches. His disciplined approach allowed him to dominate the crucial stages of the bout and secure the gold medal.

The victory capped a memorable campaign for Ankush and added another major success to India’s impressive boxing performance in Glasgow. His triumph also highlighted the depth of Indian amateur boxing, with the country’s pugilists producing a series of outstanding performances across weight categories.

Ankush’s gold was India’s ninth boxing medal of the day, taking the tally to seven gold and two silver medals. Sachin Siwach, Arundhati, Priya, Sakshi, Preeti and Jaismine had earlier won gold medals, while Lovlina and Jadumani Singh secured silver medals.

Sachin, meanwhile, clinched the men’s 60kg gold after edging Namibia’s Tryagain Morni Ndevelo by a narrow 3-2 split decision in another closely fought final. His victory further underlined India’s dominance in the boxing arena at the Games.

The remarkable boxing haul has played a major role in strengthening India’s overall position in the Commonwealth Games medal standings. Along with the boxing successes, India’s one-two finish in the men’s Shot Put F57 and a bronze medal in judo helped the country climb to fourth place.

India had won 35 medals at that stage, comprising 11 gold, 16 silver and eight bronze medals. The strong showing in Glasgow marks another significant chapter in India’s Commonwealth Games boxing campaign and reflects the growing competitiveness and depth of the country’s pugilists.

With more Indian boxers still in contention, the contingent will be aiming to add further medals and extend what has already emerged as one of the country’s most successful boxing campaigns at the Commonwealth Games.
