Training On Protection Of Women From Domestic Violence Act, 2005

Aizawl : Today, a training program on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 was organized by the State Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW), the Women & Child Development Department (WCD), and the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) at the Taxation Auditorium, MINECO. The training focused on laws protecting women from domestic violence. The event was inaugurated by Justice Nelson Sailo, Judge of the Gauhati High Court and Chairman of the High Court Legal Services Committee, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Pi Helen Dawngliani, District & Sessions Judge, Aizawl Judicial District, and Chairperson of DLSA, Aizawl, was also in attendance as a special guest.

In his inaugural speech, Justice Nelson Sailo emphasized the importance of safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring their dignity and autonomy through legal protections. He highlighted the issue of domestic violence against women and underlined the relevance of the newly reformed Indian Penal Code, known as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), in providing additional safeguards for women.

Pi Helen Dawngliani, in her speech, spoke about the deep impact of domestic conflicts on women and stressed the need for a collective effort to prevent violence and ensure harmony between men and women. She highlighted the role of mutual respect and understanding in reducing domestic violence.

The event was moderated by Pi Lalrochami Ralte, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Aizawl, and Secretary of Aizawl DLSA, who expressed her gratitude to all participants. Pi Zoramthangi Chhangte, Director of the Women & Child Development Department, discussed the department’s various initiatives, policies, and efforts to support women’s welfare. Pi Gracy L. Bawitlung, Member Secretary of the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority, gave a vote of thanks and officially closed the inaugural session.

After the inaugural session, a technical session was conducted. Dr. HTC Lalrinchhana, Registrar of the Gauhati High Court, Aizawl Bench, delivered a lecture on the key provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, explaining its significance and practical application. Pi Sylvie Zomuanpuii Ralte, Additional District & Sessions Judge, Aizawl, gave a detailed account of domestic violence cases handled by the courts and provided guidance on how to ensure efficient legal action and continued support for victims. The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, allowing for a fruitful discussion.
