Navi Mumbai Gets Rs 837 Crore Cyber HQ, New 14407 Helpline to Tackle Cybercrime

The Maharashtra government has taken a major step in combatting cybercrime by inaugurating a new Cybercrime Investigation Capacity Centre in Mahape, Navi Mumbai. The Rs 837-crore facility, which was initially approved in 2016 under then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, faced several delays but was revived in 2022 and subsequently approved by the state cabinet last year. The inauguration ceremony, held on Friday, saw Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla in attendance.

Speaking at the event, Fadnavis emphasized the growing sophistication of cyber threats and the need for advanced solutions to tackle them. He noted that the new facility is equipped with some of the best global technologies for addressing cybercrime effectively. Located in a five-storey building at Millennium Business Park, the headquarters will be the state’s main hub for handling cybercrime-related cases.

The centre boasts several key features, including a Technology-Assisted Intelligence (TAI) lab that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to investigate complex crimes, such as cryptocurrency fraud. It also includes a Security Operations Centre (SOC) for managing large-scale security breaches and threats to businesses and individuals. Additionally, a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) is in place to ensure quick responses to cyber incidents. A 24/7 Command Centre with a dedicated helpline will provide immediate support to victims.

Fadnavis also introduced a new cybercrime helpline—14407—which will be operational from October 15, offering assistance to the public in addressing cyber-related concerns.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sanjay Shintre underscored the centre’s role in bolstering Maharashtra’s defenses against cyber threats. He highlighted its importance in supporting police forces, financial institutions, and citizens to enhance the state’s overall resilience to cybercrime.
