Zulfiquar Hasan Addresses Hoax Bomb Threats Impacting Indian Airlines
In New Delhi, a significant meeting was convened by Zulfiquar Hasan, the Director General of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), to discuss the recent surge in hoax bomb threats targeting Indian airlines. This crucial gathering took place at the BCAS headquarters, bringing together representatives from various airlines to address the pressing issue.
The airlines have encountered considerable difficulties due to these threats, particularly during the peak festive season when travel demand surges. Such threats have led to increased congestion at airports, imposing additional strain on security personnel and inconveniencing passengers. In response, the BCAS has mandated that airlines adhere strictly to established safety and security protocols to mitigate these challenges.
In a proactive move, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is working in conjunction with other governmental bodies to revise existing laws, aiming to enforce stricter penalties for individuals making hoax bomb threats. Proposed revisions could include a five-year prison sentence and the implementation of a no-fly list for offenders. A committee will be tasked with drafting these amendments in collaboration with the ministries of law and home affairs.
Among the airlines affected, SpiceJet and AirAsia reported receiving five hoax bomb threats each. Over a span of just four days, a total of 30 threats were recorded, impacting flights such as SG 55, SG 116, and 9I 506.
