Prabowo Subianto Becomes Indonesia’s 8th President with Gibran Rakabuming as Vice President

On October 20, Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s former defense minister, was inaugurated as the nation’s eighth President. Accompanying him, Gibran Rakabuming, the son of former President Joko Widodo, took office as Vice President. The ceremony, held at the Nusantara Building in Jakarta, was attended by dignitaries from 33 countries, including India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, underscoring the significance of the event. This inauguration coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia.

Prabowo secured victory in the presidential election with 59% of the vote, successfully engaging young voters through an active social media campaign. Along with Gibran, he has committed to advancing the policies established by Joko Widodo, aiming to build upon the achievements of the previous administration.

With extensive experience as a defense minister under Widodo, Prabowo is well-equipped for the presidency. He faces various challenges ahead, including addressing climate change and overseeing the development of Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital. As he begins his term, Prabowo’s agenda focuses on continuing Widodo’s legacy, tackling pressing national issues, and enhancing Indonesia’s international partnerships to strengthen its global standing.
