Bangladesh HC Petition Seeks Ban on Indian TV Channels Over Cultural Impact

A petition has been filed in the Bangladesh High Court seeking a ban on Indian television channels, citing concerns over their adverse impact on Bangladeshi culture and society. Filed by Supreme Court lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan, the petition invokes Section 29 of the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006 and names the Information Ministry, Home Ministry, and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) as respondents.

The petition targets Indian channels like Star Jalsha, Star Plus, Zee Bangla, and Republic Bangla, accusing them of broadcasting unregulated content and provocative news that allegedly harm the nation’s culture, youth, and sovereignty. It also alleges that these channels disseminate propaganda against Bangladesh, potentially straining relations with India. Reports by United News of Bangladesh (UNB) and The Daily Star suggest that the petition seeks a complete ban and an official directive to cease their broadcasts.

The petition comes amidst rising communal tensions in Bangladesh, marked by attacks on temples and minorities. India has expressed concern over these incidents, with MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal urging Bangladesh to ensure the protection of minorities. The High Court, under Justices Fatema Najib and Sikder Mahmudur Razi, is expected to hear the matter next week.
