Michelle Bachelet Receives Indira Gandhi Peace Prize 2024
Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, a global champion for human rights and equality, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development. The award recognizes her lifelong dedication to promoting peace, gender equality, democracy, and human rights, even in the face of immense challenges.
The announcement was made by an international jury chaired by Shivshankar Menon, India’s former National Security Advisor and Foreign Secretary. The jury emphasized Bachelet’s exemplary contributions, stating, “The prize is awarded to Her Excellency Michelle Bachelet for her inspiring commitment to peace, gender equality, democracy, and development, as well as her contributions to strengthening India-Chile relations.”
Born on September 29, 1951, in La Cisterna, Santiago Province, Bachelet’s life has been marked by resilience. During General Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, she faced arrest, imprisonment, and torture in 1973. Following her release, she lived in exile in Australia and Germany before returning to Chile to support its democratic transition. Her determination eventually led to her election as Chile’s first female President in 2006 and again in 2014.
As President, Bachelet implemented transformative reforms, including significant changes in education and taxation. Under her leadership, Chile and India signed a free trade agreement, strengthening bilateral relations. Her work extended beyond her presidency as she took on global roles to champion equality and justice.
From 2010 to 2013, Bachelet served as the inaugural Director of UN Women, where she spearheaded global efforts for gender equality. Later, as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2018–2022), she addressed pressing international issues, including human rights violations in Palestine and other conflict zones.
Throughout her career, Bachelet has consistently advocated for marginalized communities, LGBTQ+ rights, and progressive values. Her ability to confront criticism while maintaining her unwavering commitment to justice has made her an enduring source of inspiration.
This recognition underscores Michelle Bachelet’s extraordinary contributions as a leader who has tirelessly worked to build a more equitable and peaceful world, embodying the values that the Indira Gandhi Prize celebrates.
