“CM Stalin Launches ‘Vizhudugal’ Services and Autism Excellence Center for Differently-Abled”
Under the Welfare Department for the Differently-Abled: “Vizhudugal” Rehabilitation Service Van, Excellence Centers for People with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Assistance Distribution Program Launched
In association with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, the government initiated the establishment of “Vizhudugal,” integrated service centers for the differently-abled, with the goal of providing rehabilitation services and assistance devices. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated these initiatives today (December 5, 2024) at the Secretariat.
During the event, the Chief Minister launched the “Vizhudugal” rehabilitation service van, distributed assistance devices to beneficiaries, and presented state-level awards to individuals who have excelled in serving the differently-abled community and for outstanding contributions to their welfare.
Support for Differently-Abled Persons The Chief Minister introduced the state’s first rehabilitation service van under the “Vizhudugal” scheme, designed to offer on-the-go services for the differently-abled. These vehicles will deliver rehabilitation services, accessibility training, awareness programs, and therapeutic education across Tamil Nadu. This initiative aligns with the Tamil Nadu Welfare Board’s commitment to ensure equal opportunities and accessible healthcare for all.
Additionally, the Chief Minister inaugurated the “Center of Excellence for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder” at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Chennai, built at a cost of ₹15 crore. This center aims to provide comprehensive assessment, therapy, special education, vocational training, and caregiver support for individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
Milestones in Assistance Distribution Marking the 2024 anniversary of the Assistance Devices Distribution Program, the state government provided mobility aids, scooters, and assistive devices worth ₹130 crore to approximately 26,000 beneficiaries. The Chief Minister personally handed over devices, including scooters, to two recipients, emphasizing the government’s continued support for the differently-abled.
In the last three years, assistive devices worth ₹211 crore have been distributed to over one lakh individuals, showcasing Tamil Nadu’s leadership in welfare initiatives for the differently-abled.
State-Level Awards for Excellence As part of the event, 16 individuals received state-level awards for their exemplary contributions to the welfare of the differently-abled. The awards highlight the government’s recognition of those committed to empowering this community.
Future-Ready Centers The government also announced the upgrade of 35 primary physiotherapy centers under the Tamil Nadu Welfare Board, transforming them into integrated “Vizhudugal” service centers. These centers will provide centralized rehabilitation services, making them accessible across the state.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian, Chief Secretary Na. Muruganandam, IAS, Director of Differently-Abled Welfare M. Lakshmi, IAS, and other senior officials.
