Mushroom production will help in connecting the youth with self-employment

Mushroom bags were prepared using paddy straw. For mushroom production, first of all, oyster mushroom seeds were dehydrated with hot water and formalin plus Bavistin a day before filling the bags. According to the information received, the life cycle of oyster mushroom is about 25 to 30 days and its ideal temperature is 23 to 25 degree centigrade. Paddy straw is available at the rate of Rs 4 per kg and about 50 grams of mushroom seeds are put in each bag. In this way, the cost per bag comes to less than Rs 20. About one and a half to two kilos of mushrooms are obtained from one bag.

The current temperature of Pendra region is very favorable for oyster mushroom production. Keeping this in mind, the first year students of Mahant Bisahu Das Horticulture College GPM have made a remarkable effort in the field of mushroom production. Mushroom production was successfully experimented with the guidance of the college’s Dean Dr. Narayan Sahu and the cooperation of subject teacher Dr. Chetna Jangde. First of all, the students cultivated oyster mushroom (a major type of mushroom), in which white and pink oyster mushroom varieties were selected.

Mushroom production can prove to be an economically profitable business. This initiative not only provides practical experience in agricultural science to the students, but is also economically beneficial for them and environmentally friendly. This initiative of the college will help in making the youth self-reliant by connecting them with self-employment for mushroom production in the coming times. Other professors of the college, Dr. Sonal Tiwari Assistant Professor Genetics and Plant Breeding, Dr. Shubham Thakur Agricultural Economics, Dr. Mukesh Patel Kit Science, Ms. Garima Korram Soil Science and Dr. Laxmi Prasad Bhardwaj Vegetable Science have also cooperated in this effort.
