Seed Treatment Campaign

A seed treatment campaign was organized at Lengte village, Reiek block, Mamit district on 20.12.2024 by CIPMC, Aizawl. During the program, the technical staff demonstrated the treatment of seeds with biocontrol agents (Trichoderma viride) and explained the importance of seed treatment before sowing to protect seeds from pests and diseases, particularly during the early growth stages.

Prevention is a key component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and serves as the first line of defense against harmful organisms affecting crops. Seed treatment is a preventive measure that plays a crucial role in an IPM approach by safeguarding crops from pests and diseases right from the start. Seed treatment involves applying insecticides, fungicides, nematicides, and biocontrol agents (biopesticides) to seeds before sowing. Its goal is to protect both the seeds and future seedlings from pests and diseases. Without timely management, these harmful organisms can cause significant damage, especially when crops are most vulnerable during their early growth stages.

Seed treatment can reduce or delay the need for additional crop protection products like insecticides and fungicides, as crops are already shielded from certain pests and pathogens. Additionally, seed treatment targets pests at their source, unlike foliar spraying methods. It helps maintain a balance between effective pest control and environmental sustainability, making it an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and time-saving method.

By adopting seed treatment, farmers can promote sustainable agriculture and increase crop productivity in an environmentally responsible manner.
