Trump Signs Executive Order to Withdraw US from Paris Climate Accord

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has once again signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Paris Climate Accord. This action, echoing his first-term decision in 2017, was signed in front of thousands of supporters at the Capital One Arena. Notably, the previous withdrawal was reversed by President Joe Biden on his first day in office in 2021, signaling a sharp policy divergence on climate change between the two administrations.

The Paris Agreement, established in 2015, is an international framework designed to combat climate change. Nearly 200 nations have committed to keeping global temperature increases below 2 degrees Celsius, with an aspirational target of limiting the rise to 1.5 degrees. While countries are tasked with formulating their own strategies to meet these goals, the agreement itself is not legally binding.

In addition to withdrawing from the climate accord, Trump signed another executive directive aimed at protecting freedom of speech. The order seeks to prevent future governmental censorship and to end what he described as the previous administration’s “weaponization of the government against political opponents.” Trump also signed several other executive actions in the Oval Office and answered questions from the media following these announcements.

During his address at the Capital One Arena, Trump underscored the achievements of his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, describing it as the most successful political campaign in both national and global history. “MAGA was the most successful political campaign and movement in the history of our country and the world. We’re not over yet. We have a long way to go,” he declared.

On Monday, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States in a ceremony held at the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office. Trump’s Vice President, JD Vance, also took his oath as the 50th Vice President of the United States.

Following his inauguration, Trump proclaimed the beginning of a “golden age” for America. He declared January 20 as “liberation day,” signaling a new chapter for the country under his leadership.
