Sewer Overflow to Be Top Priority After Government Formation: Kejriwal

Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has announced that addressing the issue of sewer overflow will be the government’s first priority after its formation. Highlighting the critical nature of the problem, he emphasized that sewer overflow leads to contaminated water entering drinking water pipelines, posing severe health risks to residents.

Kejriwal reflected on the challenges faced when his party first came to power, stating that one of the biggest hurdles was managing Delhi’s sewer systems, especially in unauthorized colonies. “Delhi has 1,792 illegal colonies, and before 2015, no development work was allowed in these areas due to legal restrictions, including Supreme Court and Central Government orders. Despite these barriers, we initiated developmental work in these colonies,” he said.

He explained that prior to AAP’s efforts, these colonies lacked sewer pipelines entirely. As a result, untreated sewage flowed into open drains and streets, making daily life unbearable for residents. Over the past decade, AAP has made significant progress by laying sewer pipelines in nearly all unauthorized colonies, with ongoing work to connect homes to the network.

However, Kejriwal acknowledged that many older colonies still face issues with aging sewer pipelines, which lead to frequent complaints of blockages, overflows, and leaks. “Today, we hear many grievances about sewers overflowing or mixing with drinking water, causing serious health concerns. These problems demand immediate attention,” he said.

Outlining his plan, Kejriwal assured residents that replacing old and dysfunctional sewer pipelines would be a priority in the new government. “If there are sewer problems in your area, don’t worry. After our government is formed, we will promptly replace the old pipelines and address sewer-related issues. Additionally, we will ensure regular sewer cleaning to provide a clean and hygienic environment for all,” he assured.

Kejriwal reiterated AAP’s commitment to improving basic infrastructure and resolving issues that directly affect the health and well-being of Delhi’s residents. He also appealed to citizens to report sewer-related concerns without hesitation, promising timely action and a better quality of life.

This announcement comes as part of AAP’s broader agenda to improve public utilities and urban infrastructure, with a focus on sustainable and inclusive development.
