Presidential Election Commences in Belarus
Minsk: Belarus has officially begun its presidential election process as polling stations opened nationwide on Sunday at 8:00 AM local time (0500 GMT). Voting will continue until 8:00 PM (1700 GMT), with five candidates, including the incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, competing for the nation’s top office, according to Xinhua news agency.
The Central Election Commission (CEC) has established 5,325 polling stations across Belarus to accommodate approximately 6.9 million eligible voters. The election will be deemed valid if over 50% of registered voters participate, while a candidate will require more than half of the votes cast to secure the presidency.
Early voting, which concluded on January 25, saw a turnout of 41.81% of eligible voters, the CEC announced. This five-day session was organized for those unable to vote on election day. The breakdown of polling stations by region includes 925 in Gomel, 894 in Minsk, 861 in Brest, 701 in the capital city of Minsk, 683 in Mogilev, 672 in Vitebsk, and 589 in Grodno.
Under Belarusian law, the President is chosen through direct elections. If no candidate garners the required majority of over 50%, a runoff election will be held between the top two contenders, with the winner determined by a simple majority. Presidential elections occur every five years.
President Lukashenko, who has held office since 1994, is seeking re-election in this cycle. In the previous election on August 9, 2020, he secured his sixth term with 80.1% of the vote, a result that sparked significant domestic and international controversy.
The outcome of this election will determine whether Lukashenko extends his nearly three-decade rule or whether Belarus embarks on a new political chapter under different leadership. With polling underway, both citizens and international observers will closely monitor the process and its implications for the nation’s future.
