Mirza Azam’s Residence Vandalized and Set on Fire

Jamalpur : The residence of Awami League organizing secretary and former state minister Mirza Azam was vandalized and set ablaze this evening amid growing political unrest.

According to witnesses, a bulldozer arrived in the afternoon and began demolishing the main gate and boundary wall of Azam’s two-story house. Shortly after, a group of protesters stormed the property, ransacked the premises, and set it on fire.

Mir Ishaq Hasan Ikhlas, convener of the District Student Against Discrimination, stated, “In response to Sheikh Hasina’s live address, agitated protesters targeted Mirza Azam’s house. We tried to defuse the situation.”

This is not the first attack on Azam’s residence. A similar arson incident occurred on August 5 last year following the fall of the Awami League-led government.

A key political figure in the Awami League, Azam has been elected as the MP for Jamalpur-3 (Madaripur-Melandah) seven consecutive times. He has also served as a whip and as the state minister for textiles and jute.

However, allegations of embezzling large sums from government development projects have surfaced against him. Since the fall of the Hasina administration, Azam and his family have reportedly gone into hiding.

The incident underscores the ongoing political tension in the region, with security forces closely monitoring the situation.
