“Nepal’s Republic Day: Celebrating Freedom, Progress, and Democracy!”
The 17th Republic Day is being celebrated across Nepal today, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history. Republic Day is closely associated with the people’s movement and their aspirations for transitioning Nepal from a monarchy to a republic.
A special event was held at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, where the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force participated in march-pasts and cultural pageants. A Nepal Army helicopter flew over Tundikhel, displaying a banner reading ‘Republic Day, 2081’ and showering flowers. The distinguished gathering included the President, Vice President, Chief Justice, Speaker, Chairman of the National Assembly, Deputy Prime Ministers, former prime ministers, ministers, and chiefs of diplomatic missions in the country.
Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as ‘Prachanda,’ highlighted that the establishment of the republic is the culmination of collective political efforts aimed at building a prosperous Nepal with social justice at its core.
PM Dahal emphasized the significant progress made in improving people’s lives and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting national interests through an independent and balanced foreign policy.
Following the armed conflict of the CPN Maoist and the peaceful movement of the seven parties, King Gyanendra Shah restored the House of Representatives on April 24, 2006, returning governance to the people’s representatives. Two years later, on May 28, 2008, the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly declared Nepal a Republic.
