18 Killed in Stampede at Delhi Railway Station Amid Kumbh Rush
Delhi: A stampede at New Delhi railway station this evening left 18 people dead, including three children, and 10 others injured as thousands of passengers rushed to board trains bound for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
The tragedy occurred around 9 PM when two special trains were delayed, leading to overcrowding and chaos on platforms 14, 15, and 16. As the crowd surged, panic ensued, resulting in the fatal stampede.
The Chief Medical Officer of LNJP Hospital confirmed the casualties, stating, “Eighteen people have lost their lives, and ten others are injured.” The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The government has ordered a high-level investigation into the incident. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena was the first to confirm the tragedy and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as railway staff and security personnel struggled to manage the swelling crowd. Authorities have now increased security at major stations to prevent further incidents.
This tragic event has raised concerns over crowd management and safety measures at railway stations during large religious gatherings.
