Mumbai Coastal Road Project is Completely Safe – Citizens Should Not Believe Rumors or Misinformation: BMC

The Dharamveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project is completely safe, and there are no cracks or potholes on the road, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has clarified. Recent visuals and photos of mastic layering on the Hajiali bridge have led to media speculation about construction defects, but BMC strongly refutes these allegations, stating that the mastic layer is a preventive measure to protect the road from damage, particularly during the monsoon.

Clarification by BMC

The northbound lane of the Mumbai Coastal Road (from Chowpatty to Worli) was opened to traffic in July 2024, after its asphalting was completed. Some expansion joints in the asphalt had widened, and to prevent further widening and ensure durability, mastic coating was applied in specific areas. This was done to prevent potholes from forming due to heavy rainfall. A fresh asphalt layer will now be applied as per engineering standards, and the road will be restored to its original state within 15 to 20 days, BMC stated.

However, on the southbound lane (from Worli to Chowpatty), no mastic layer was applied, as this section was opened in March 2024 and had sufficient time to settle before the monsoon. This further proves that there are no construction defects in the project.

Given these facts, BMC urges all Mumbai residents and media houses not to believe or spread misinformation. The Dharamveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project is a landmark infrastructure development for Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the nation. There is no compromise on engineering quality, construction standards, or safety, and citizens should have no doubts about its structural integrity.
