Education Minister Holds Meeting On State University In Chungchangah
Aizawl : A meeting regarding the establishment of Mizoram State University was held at 1:00 PM on 28th February 2025 (Friday). The meeting, convened by the Non-Government Organisation Co-ordination Committee, Lunglei, discussed the proposal for setting up the university in Lunglei and Champhai, as suggested by the Champhai District NGO Co-ordination Committee. Government representatives actively participated in the discussion.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Vanlalthlana, Minister for Higher & Technical Education, and attended by Minister & MLA Pi Lalrinpuii (Lunglei East), MLA Pu V. Malsawmtluanga (Lunglei North), MLA Pu Lalramliana Papuia (Lunglei South), MLA Er. Ginzalala (Champhai North), and officials from the Higher & Technical Education Department.
During the meeting, the government acknowledged the strong demand from NGOs for the university and provided updates on the steps already taken towards its establishment. As per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, by 2035, Central Universities are expected to transition into research-intensive institutions. This shift implies that State Universities will need to take over undergraduate and other degree programs. Consequently, the Mizoram government recognizes the necessity of establishing a State University.
Setting up a State University requires significant financial investment. Given the state’s financial limitations, the government is examining models adopted by other states to ensure feasibility. While the preferred approach is to establish a dedicated university campus, financial constraints may necessitate a clustered university model, utilizing existing colleges to form an integrated university system. This aligns with the multidisciplinary framework outlined in NEP 2020, which encourages the efficient use of resources.
In light of these discussions, the Mizoram State University Bill, 2025, is set to be introduced in the upcoming Assembly session.
