Phnom Penh-New Delhi Direct Flight Launched, Boosting India-Cambodia Connections

On Sunday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Neth Savoeun and Indian Ambassador Devyani Khobragade launched the first-ever direct flight between Phnom Penh and New Delhi.

Cambodia Angkor Air, the national flag carrier, will operate this new route four times a week. The launch ceremony was attended by several members of the Indian community, signifying not only improved travel convenience for tourists but also a strengthening of the historical ties between Cambodia and India.

The Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh hailed the event as a “historic moment” in line with India’s “Act East” Policy.

In a statement, Cambodia Angkor Air noted that this new connection will enhance accessibility to the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for Indian tourists. It will also facilitate better access for Cambodian patients seeking medical treatments in India.

“With the rich histories and shared interests of both nations, Cambodia Angkor Air is confident in the positive impact and potential of this new service,” the statement read.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently highlighted the historical and cultural bonds between India and Cambodia. He has often pointed to India’s role in the restoration of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear temples as evidence of these deep-rooted connections.
