PM inaugurates Nalanda University Campus in Rajgir, Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that knowledge can play a crucial role in making India developed by 2047. Addressing a gathering of students and faculty members at the Sushama Swaraj Auditorium at Nalanda University in Rajgir, Mr. Modi stated that India can achieve superpower status by strengthening its education and knowledge systems. The Prime Minister inaugurated the newly built campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, noting that the university exemplifies India’s identity and traditions to the world.

He highlighted that the rejuvenation of Nalanda University in its new form symbolizes the capacity and might of an emerging India. Mr. Modi emphasized that his government is working on the ethos of ancient traditions, promoting development and environmental conservation together. He mentioned that the International Solar Alliance is one such initiative they are supporting.

Mr. Modi reiterated that his government aims to re-establish India as a major knowledge center by providing a new identity in the education sector.

Speaking on the occasion, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said they are witnessing the revival of a global bridge of learning that can foster relationships beyond what was achieved in the past. He emphasized that education, training, and capacity building are the most effective ways of promoting international understanding.

Lauding the history of the ancient university, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, “The Nalanda University has a glorious history. In ancient times, Nalanda University was recognized as a center of education.” The Prime Minister also visited the ruins of ancient Nalanda University, which has been accorded World Heritage status. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha, and other delegates were present at the new campus of Nalanda University. Ambassadors from 17 countries also attended the event.

The ruins of ancient Nalanda comprise the archaeological remains of a monastic and scholastic institution, including stupas, shrines, viharas (residential and educational buildings), and important artworks in stucco, stone, and metal.
