RCB Storms to Victory Against KKR in IPL 2025 Opener

Kolkata: The TATA IPL 2025 season kicked off with a bang as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) put on a dominant display to secure a commanding seven-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the tournament’s opening match. Led by captain Rajat Patidar, RCB chased down KKR’s target of 175 runs with 22 balls to spare at the iconic Eden Gardens.

Virat Kohli, IPL’s all-time leading run-scorer, showcased his brilliance yet again, finishing unbeaten on 59 runs. His spectacular opening partnership with Phil Salt (56 off 31 balls) set the stage for RCB’s emphatic win. However, the foundation of the victory was laid by Krunal Pandya, whose exceptional spell of 3/29 turned the game in RCB’s favor after KKR’s strong start.

KKR’s Fiery Start Cut Short by RCB’s Comeback

Winning the toss, RCB opted to bowl first, and the match got off to an electrifying start. Quinton de Kock had an early reprieve when Suyash Sharma dropped a catch off Josh Hazlewood. However, Hazlewood ensured the drop didn’t cost RCB much as he dismissed de Kock just two balls later with wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma taking a sharp low catch.

Despite the early wicket, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane and Sunil Narine launched a counterattack. Rahane, playing his first IPL match as KKR’s skipper, unleashed an array of elegant strokes, smashing two sixes and a four in quick succession. Narine, too, joined the assault, helping KKR reach a strong 60/1 at the end of the powerplay, with Rahane racing to 39 off just 16 balls.

Rahane soon reached a 25-ball half-century, but RCB fought back as Rasikh Dar dismissed Narine for 44 off 26 balls. The breakthrough opened the floodgates, with Rahane departing soon after for 56 (31), caught in the deep off Krunal Pandya’s bowling. Pandya’s exceptional spell put RCB in control, as KKR found themselves at 145/5 after 15 overs.

The collapse continued as Suyash Sharma bowled a beauty to send Andre Russell back to the pavilion. Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s quickfire 30 off 22 balls provided some late resistance, but RCB bowlers ensured KKR was restricted to 174/8 in 20 overs. Pandya (3/29), Hazlewood (2/22), and Suyash Sharma (1/18) were the key architects of RCB’s comeback.

Kohli and Salt Shine in RCB’s Power-Packed Chase

RCB’s response was aggressive right from the first ball. Phil Salt and Virat Kohli launched an onslaught on the KKR bowlers, taking full advantage of the powerplay. The duo smashed boundaries at will, propelling RCB to 80/0 in the first six overs, their second-highest powerplay score in IPL history.

Salt, in particular, was in devastating form, racing to his fifty in just 25 balls. He hammered nine fours and two sixes in his explosive 31-ball innings before Varun Chakravarthy finally dismissed him for 56, caught by Spencer Johnson.

After Salt’s dismissal, Devdutt Padikkal (10) was run out by Sunil Narine in an unfortunate mix-up. However, Kohli remained composed and continued his dominance. The RCB legend reached his 55th IPL half-century off just 30 balls with a trademark cover drive. Captain Rajat Patidar provided solid support, playing a quickfire 34 off 16 balls before being run out by Vaibhav Arora.

With the match firmly in RCB’s grasp, Kohli and Liam Livingstone guided the team home. Kohli finished unbeaten on 59 off 36 balls, hitting four boundaries and three sixes, while Livingstone remained not out on 15. RCB reached the target in just 16.2 overs, sealing a comprehensive seven-wicket win.

What This Means for IPL 2025

RCB’s emphatic victory in the season opener sends a strong message to the rest of the teams. Their batting firepower, spearheaded by Kohli and Salt, combined with their potent bowling attack, makes them early contenders for the title.

For KKR, the loss exposes vulnerabilities in their middle-order batting and bowling attack. While Rahane and Narine impressed, their failure to capitalize on a strong start cost them the match.

Scorecard:

Kolkata Knight Riders: 174/8 in 20 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 56, Sunil Narine 44, Krunal Pandya 3/29, Josh Hazlewood 2/22)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 177/3 in 16.2 overs (Virat Kohli 59*, Phil Salt 56, Rajat Patidar 34, Sunil Narine 1/27)
Result: RCB won by 7 wickets.

With this explosive start, IPL 2025 promises to be yet another thrilling season filled with action-packed matches and unforgettable performances!
