Iyer’s Instincts and Wadhera’s Calm Lift PBKS to Victory

In a rain-marred thriller at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Punjab Kings (PBKS) clinched a gritty five-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a match that underscored the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket. Reduced to 14 overs per side after a two-hour rain delay, the encounter offered a roller-coaster of momentum swings, standout bowling spells, and a composed finish from Nehal Wadhera.

Chasing a modest target of 96, PBKS rode on Wadhera’s unbeaten 33 off 19 balls to secure victory in 12.1 overs. The match, however, was defined not just by Punjab’s chase but by the collapse that preceded it.

RCB’s innings never really took off after being put in to bat. Arshdeep Singh set the tone early by removing Phil Salt and Virat Kohli in quick succession, using bounce and movement effectively. Kohli’s dismissal, a mistimed pull caught by Marco Jansen, left the Chinnaswamy crowd stunned. Arshdeep’s fiery opening spell saw him leap past Piyush Chawla to become PBKS’ leading wicket-taker in IPL history with 86 wickets.

Xavier Bartlett and Yuzvendra Chahal tightened the screws further. Bartlett sent back Liam Livingstone, while Chahal claimed the key wickets of Jitesh Sharma and Rajat Patidar, reducing RCB to 42/7. Marco Jansen then compounded RCB’s misery, picking up three scalps including Krunal Pandya and Impact Substitute Manoj Bhandage.

It was only Tim David’s defiance that prevented RCB from an embarrassing total. The Australian power-hitter carved out a belligerent 50 not out from 26 deliveries, injecting some life into an otherwise dismal RCB innings. His three consecutive sixes off Harpreet Brar in the final over and boundaries off Bartlett ensured RCB reached 95/9, a score that at least gave their bowlers something to defend.

In reply, Punjab’s chase got off to a rocky start. Priyansh Arya edged a boundary over slips and struggled before perishing for 16. Prabhsimran Singh looked promising but fell to a clever change of length from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Hazlewood then delivered a double blow, removing skipper Shreyas Iyer (7) and Josh Inglis (14), leaving PBKS wobbling at 52/4.

It was in this uncertain phase that Wadhera took charge. Calm and calculated, the left-hander absorbed the pressure and picked his moments to attack. A lofted six over cow corner off Suyash Sharma and a brace of boundaries in the 12th over tilted the game back in Punjab’s favour. Even as Shashank Singh departed trying to clear long-on, Wadhera remained unfazed, guiding the chase with mature shot selection and precise placement.

Speaking after the win, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer praised the game’s unpredictability. “Variety is the flavour of life, and we are here to experience all kinds of games; it’s a great challenge,” he said. On his tactical decisions, Iyer admitted he leaned on instinct. “I didn’t think too much. I was just making instinctive moves. Jansen was getting bounce and was lethal,” he added. Jansen’s 2/10 was indeed instrumental in dismantling RCB’s middle and lower order.

While Punjab’s bowling unit collectively stepped up—Arshdeep (2-23), Jansen (2-10), Chahal (2-11), and Brar (2-25)—RCB’s top order capitulated under pressure. The pitch, known for its batting-friendly nature, played unexpectedly slow and tricky, making stroke play a gamble rather than a given.

Despite a few tense moments, PBKS crossed the finish line with 11 balls to spare, with Marcus Stoinis applying the finishing touch by dispatching a short delivery over midwicket. Wadhera’s composed knock earned him the accolades, but it was a collective effort—led by the bowling unit and backed by a composed middle order—that sealed the deal.

The match highlighted the highs and lows of a format where no total is truly safe, and no match is ever predictable. PBKS will take heart from this hard-fought victory, while RCB are left to reflect on missed opportunities and a crumbling batting lineup that failed to deliver under pressure.

Team Maverick.
