Good Governance Festival 2025: Deepak Mahilang – A Powerful Step Towards Self-Reliance

“Now I no longer depend on anyone—I can do my tasks myself,” says Deepak.

Bemetara : In a powerful display of empowerment under Suśāsan Tihār 2025 (Good Governance Festival 2025), Deepak Mahilang from the village of Maro, Nawagarh Block, has taken a bold step towards self-reliance. Despite 90% disability, Deepak is now living independently, thanks to a battery-operated tricycle provided by the Department of Social Welfare under the Good Governance initiative.

Coming from a rural background where transport was a major hurdle for people with disabilities, Deepak’s life took a turn when he received the tricycle. Now, he moves freely, runs errands, and actively participates in community activities. “Earlier, I always had to depend on someone to go anywhere. Now, I can go to the market on my own and even attend Panchayat meetings,” he shared proudly.

In addition to mobility support, Deepak also receives financial aid under the Social Welfare Scheme, helping him meet his monthly needs. This assistance is not just economic—it’s a source of mental strength and dignity.

According to departmental sources, several others have benefitted under this initiative:

  • Nandlal Mahakur (100% disability) from Keshatara village, Berla block
  • Milan Kumar Ghiwar (40%) from Sodh village
  • Navaldas Mahakur (85%) from Keshatara
  • Santosh Sahu (80%) from Raveli village

These beneficiaries were provided with equipment tailored to their needs, such as battery-powered tricycles, manual tricycles, and wheelchairs. They also receive monthly pensions under the Disability Assistance Scheme.

The Deputy Director of Social Welfare emphasized that under Suśāsan Tihār, all public applications are being addressed swiftly to ensure eligible individuals are not left out of welfare schemes.

Deepak’s story symbolizes the true impact of timely and sensitive governance. He is no longer just a beneficiary—he is a beacon of change and a testament to how inclusive administration can transform lives.

“In Chhattisgarh, where governance is compassionate, change is inevitable.”
