Enhanced CCTV Surveillance at All Mumbai Railway Stations to Ensure Passenger Safety

Mumbai : In light of the recent cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, security at public places across Maharashtra is being tightened. The Mumbai Police Commissionerate has informed that surveillance at railway stations and surrounding areas in Mumbai is being significantly enhanced through an extensive network of CCTV cameras to ensure the safety of passengers.

There are 139 railway stations under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate. Every day, around 7,500 to 8,000 local train services operate, carrying nearly 75 to 80 lakh passengers. To ensure their safety, all these stations are under constant and effective CCTV surveillance.

Police personnel maintain close contact with Police Mitras (civil volunteers), peace committees, passenger organizations, canteen workers, railway staff, sanitation workers, porters, and shoe polishers. This grassroots-level vigilance helps in quickly identifying and reporting any suspicious person, item, or activity. It is mandatory for every Senior Police Inspector to spend at least two hours daily in the field.

Additionally, every officer is required to conduct a minimum of four hours of patrol within their station limits. Random passenger inspections are conducted regularly, following a set procedure. These include surprise checks inside local trains under a campaign termed ‘Massive Flash Checking,’ where one officer accompanied by 3–4 personnel inspects passengers, train racks, and their belongings. Anti-sabotage checks are carried out daily, and photos of such inspections are shared on internal WhatsApp groups of the Commissionerate, with a centralized monitoring system at the control room.

The Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate has assured that it remains vigilant and proactive in conducting thorough anti-sabotage operations across all its railway stations.
